Damon Ye’s Journal Entry#3

We as Baruch Scholars are blessed with nearly unlimited resources including faculty, peers, staff, support centers, libraries, and student clubs among others. Although some of us have not used these resources, I have used a vast majority of the resources available to me.

For me and hopefully many other scholars, the library is my most used resource. Baruch’s library is the best library I have been in. Although the comfortable couches are not a big factor of why I consider it the best it certainly is a plus. But what separates this library from other mediocre libraries is the atmosphere. There is this barrier between the first floor and the second floor that seems to welcome those that want to achieve academic success. Everyone in the library is there to do what they have to do to succeed. I find this attribute of the library the most appealing because I have a similar mentality.

Within the library as Baruch students we are allowed to obtain a study room. For the community service project this service has proved to be useful. We were able to get things organized and our ideas to be put on paper. There is no other place probably in the world where our group could meet together without the distraction of the surroundings. The study room isolates the outside environment so we can have the perfect working environment to get things done properly. For our team the study room was what gave our project our edge. I plan to use this service till I graduate because I believe it will benefit me in my future courses and success.

I have yet to join a club but I have joined a team. The tennis team is something I really have a passion for if it wasn’t obvious before. Tennis is something I plan to continue for the rest of my life. Being on the team has actually taught me something that is essential in life; you can’t achieve something great on your own. What I mean by this is that you need to utilize everything you have access to in order to achieve your dreams. In order to get better in tennis you need your team to push you to do so. This applies especially to us as Baruch scholars.

I have always understood community service as something mostly beneficiary to the recipients but I have recently learned that community service can benefit the person performing the action as well. Aside from making the person feel good, community service also helps develop leadership skills, communication skills, and time management skills. In a way, the community service project benefits us, Baruch scholars, more than the community.

There are several ways to serve ones community. The most obvious way to do the community a service is through donations and volunteer work. I believe there is another way to benefit the community. To better a community one could also invest his or her time within occupations such as pediatricians, firemen, policemen, and many more. As an honor student I will attempt to do both kinds of community service.

The culture surrounding the Baruch Honors Program itself promotes community service. Being selected in this program already shows that we, Baruch Scholars,  are well rounded in many areas. As Baruch Scholars we are given the opportunity to become future leaders in business, mathematics, science, and arts. This Community Service Program offers us the opportunity to fully experience what it takes to be a leader and prepares us for the future fields we plan to excel in.

With the enormous scholarship Baruch College gives us it is only right that we give something back in return. In more ways than one, we could provide services for Baruch itself. By creating new clubs, keeping the campus clean, and simple random acts of kindness we can make the community surrounding Baruch even more comfortable than it already is. We Baruch Scholars, through our community service, will make sure that tomorrow will be a better day.

Journal Entry #1:A Pebble in Damon Ye’s Pouch

I remember my first day in high school as a freshman. I walked into the school to my first class. I looked around, I didn’t know anyone. The same thing happened in the next class and the class after that. By the end of the day I had felt lonely. None of my previous friends went to this high school. It was as if I had to start over again, start an entire new life. Although I warmed up to the self-reliant atmosphere of high school I have always missed my old friends. Some of which, I have recently found out go to Baruch. I should begin catching up with them in my free time. Till this day I still believe that friends are not something you want to lose.

As an freshman I expect to work much harder than I did in high school. I plan to join Baruch’s tennis team and some clubs if I have time. When I first came to Baruch I expected college to be fairly easy and it was, at first. But as the semester went on things got much more difficult than I had originally expected. Especially for history. It has never been my strongest subject but I have never recieved a horrible grade. My biggest concern at the moment is falling behind in the reading. Some classes, including Anthropology, requires intensive reading everyday. One class is not difficult to manage but grouped together with several other classes, keeping up with the reading might be an issue. In the course of this semester I hope to improve my study habbits and time management.

Today I didn’t do much. I went  to Leif Ericson park at 10 and practiced serving till 1. Second serve has a little more kick to it. Getting better but not there yet. 😀 Played some more tennis after eating until 6 or 7 when it started raining. Backhand goes long a lot. I’m bending from my waist sometimes got to get rid of that bad habbit.  Still can’t handle the high ball above the shoulder. Still got some lazy feet here and there but I’m taking the ball earlier now. Hitting late doesn’t seem to be much of an issue anymore. Can’t wait to join the school team.
