I am a first-year student at Baruch College majoring in Finance. This website is for my English Writing II blog, where I’ll post my narrative essay, creative art, discussion board, research paper project, and some thoughts & experiences from this site. Feel free to contact me via my college email: [email protected]
The narrative essay is the most meaningful project for me this semester because it allows me to share a part of my personal history with the general public. I get to express myself using a particular style of writing that combines creativity and language with different groups of people in my community. These include my classmates, immigrants, friends, and even my family. The essay holds great significance for me because it enables me to reflect on my past experiences and extract valuable lessons from that period of my life.
The most surprising aspect of this semester was how I managed to find a balance between working part-time and starting my first year of college. I was worried that it would overwhelm me since I had no clue about the life of a college student. However, as I progressed through my freshman year, I continued to work and actively participate in various school activities. One noteworthy experience was joining the marketing committee of the UCLA club. This particular memory holds a special place in my heart because it marks the beginning of my college journey.
Read and analyze texts critically:
I have accomplished all of my course goals this semester, and I can confidently say that my reading skills have greatly improved compared to the first semester, mainly due to taking two English Writing courses. Now, I feel much stronger in my ability to critically analyze various texts like articles, newspapers, and essays. Initially, I found it challenging to delve into the deeper meaning of passages, for instance, reading articles and other colleagues’ essays, but with determination, I managed to overcome this difficulty.
Write your own texts critically & Identify and engage with credible sources and multiple perspectives:
I am immensely grateful to my professors of Writing I & II, who have played a significant role in my progress. Through these courses, I have not only learned to critically evaluate and interpret texts but also gained valuable skills in creating my own written work(e.g. narrative essay & creative art). One of the techniques I acquired is the practice of organizing my thoughts before starting an essay. Moreover, I have learned the importance of carefully selecting the right words and adopting appropriate tones or voices to engage different audiences effectively. This involves considering the preferences and expectations of my target readers.
Compose as a process:
However, I must emphasize that my success this semester was not solely a result of my efforts. I owe a great deal of gratitude to my fellow classmates, professors, and friends, who provided invaluable support throughout the writing process. They helped me revise my research paper, offered encouragement during moments of struggle, and inspired me with new ideas. The sense of community I experienced played a pivotal role in my achievements.
Use conventions appropriate to audience, genre, and purpose:
Regarding the depth of my papers, both narrative and research. I consciously opted for a neutral tone to ensure that my arguments would be easily comprehensible to my audience. Since my readers belong to my community, I aimed to strike a balance by avoiding an overly serious tone. In the end, I successfully conveyed my messages while maintaining a level of relatability. Overall, I am proud to have fulfilled the expectations of the course and achieved my goals.
