Thesis: Extensive use of multitasking has a negative implication on one’s brain and leads to much less productivity.
Supporting Points: Doing multiple things at once in quick succession will overall take longer than doing them one at a time and will end up restricting the brainpower necessary to perform each task.
Multitasking, which is usually done under high levels of stress, causes short term memory loss.
Still a work in progress and may change over the week!
Very cool claims, Daniel. I feel like your paper is taking a turn towards the sciences. It will be interesting to see how you research the effects of multitasking on productivity. Your topic kind of reminds me of the phrase “haste makes waste.” I remember how my teachers would tell us not to rush to get projects done quickly because the end result may be a mess; instead, they said, it’s better to take your time and pace yourself. So I assume you’re going to talk about how the Internet turns us into “multitaskers” and then explain and prove why that is ultimately a bad thing? Sounds really interesting.
Like we talked about in class yesterday, I think you need a more specific thesis as it’s a little broad to work at the moment. You should also consider the way you’re going to set your introduction up in terms of motive. Like Chaya said, you’re probably going to end up using a lot of scientific research to prove your point. However, I think it’s important that you present the science in an engaging way.
Great suggestion, Chaya! Will definitely try to work that into my paper! Yeah, Damla, mine is pretty broad. The thing is, if I use social media as the negative implication on one’s brain, that will be an opposing viewpoint to that of my first paper, in which I stated that social media has helped one with making connections and friendships. But because that paper was specific mainly to my experiences and this one is taking many more people into account, I can go about substantiating my point in even more ways. So, that’s a positive I guess!
I dont think that looking at social media as a negative implication on ones brain goes against your feelings about how it can also be used for good, like in building relationships. Actually, there is your motive! You can say that the internet is a wonderful thing because you are able to foster relationships that would ever have otherwise happened, and then go on to talk about being careful with the internet, because of its negative implications. Maybe you can say that it only becomes bad when you take it too far. Is multitasking always a bad thing? I find that it helps me focus sometimes, in moderation
