In her writing, Woolf illustrates her confidence through her firm tone and diction. She avoids using a logical structure of most academic arguments, and chooses to argue her thesis statement with fiction. Woolf chooses to give her interpretations through a shadowy persona so that she can handle her topic ironically and introduce rises and falls to the story without seeming disingenuous.

How does the theme of home resonate throughout the excerpt?
Home, in the passage, meant shelters for Gertrude Stein. Miss Stein stayed in multiple homes during her time in Europe. She must have enjoyed the feeling of possessing a home where she belonged to. She was not only provided a shelter and food at her homes, but she gained warmth as well. What, according to Stein, held up a home was the warmth in it. Home meant homeland as well. For most people who went through wars, the country and the hometown that they came from meant home. That home is one that people were willing to sacrifice their lives for.
