A Little About Me
My name is Diemmy Ngoc Nguyen and I am eighteen years old. I was born in the Philippines, but I’m ethnically Vietnamese and Chinese. I moved here with my parents when I was three years old and have lived in the Bronx all my life. At home, I speak Vietnamese and English but I’m much better at English. I now live with my mom and my younger sister.
I am a full time student at Baruch College and I would like to pursue psychology as a major. I never really knew what I wanted to be and I’m still unsure about my career path, but that seems to be the best choice for me. Ever since I took a psychology class here, I’ve been very interested in the field. Also, I’ve found out that it’s my strongest class in school, because I get A’s while enjoying it at the same time. Psychology seems to be the best field for me to pursue a career in, because I have a big imagination and I often like to think about the reason behind the things humans do.
The weakest class for me is math. It just feels like a subject I’m always trying hard to figure out, and doesn’t flow naturally or intuitively like it does for many of my classmates. I’m decent at algebra, but calculus is a different story. It just feels very complicated and overwhelming for me because there are so many close ended things to remember, unlike subjects such as English and psychology. I guess I’m not good at remembering and applying a lot of formulas that will only produce one right answer.
When I’m not in school, I like to relax and have fun. My hobbies include chatting on AIM, watching anime and Korean dramas, and hanging out with family and friends. I also like to shop but not when I have to walk long distances while carrying heavy bags. Some things that I like to do when hanging out are going to the movies, going to the city, cooking/baking, playing video games, or just being at a friend’s house.
I think both my biggest strength and weakness is my willpower. It is my biggest strength because when I really want to accomplish a goal, I do whatever it takes to get there, even if I have to face many hardships. It’s also my biggest weakness, because I get too hopeful sometimes and can’t see that I’m overdoing something. That often leads to disappointment when I find out there’s no way I can actually accomplish that goal. Eventually, I just get over the disappointment and keep moving forward, because my willpower makes me feel like once one door closes, another one will always open.
