Personal Statment

Personal Statment

My writing journey has shown a shift in style throughout the years. I never had much trouble organizing my thoughts or researching for my writing. The biggest change is the voice I project in my writing. I try to make my writing sound as if I was speaking with my own voice. Often this clashes with the use of proper grammar because we rarely speak with perfect syntax. I put in effort to find a middle ground in my writing to make sure it has a perfect balance of professionalism while still sounding human. It may not be apparent in this statement but I try to keep my sentences short and make every word count. I use Hemmingway as a bit of an inspiration to write like this.

I’m a transfer student so I didn’t take writing 2100 but I did take writing composition. I did well in the class thankfully and I am hoping to continue that. The biggest improvement that class provided me in my writing was sheer practice. Learning new techniques to improve your writing is important but there is no replacement for just writing and getting the hours in.

I can have trouble organizing my time. I recently got diagnosed and medicated for ADHD and I’m still getting used to it. I’ve always been good at participating in class and I hope that continues this semester.
