Foundation for Success:
My friend once asked me a question that had never even crossed my mind. He asked me
what I considered to be my proudest moment in life. Surprisingly I had to really think about what
I consider being my proudest moment, because I believe I am still young and still have a lot more not only to learn but even more to accomplish and explore. It reminded me of one of the old sayings I used to hear from my dad about getting my “feet wet.”After brainstorming for a while, I realized that my proudest moment was not just a single moment in itself but a series of moments depicted from a single action. Being as it may, the first thought that came to mind of when I was most proud of myself was when I allowed myself to step out of my own comfort zone and challenge myself to come across new experiences. This includes acquiring my first job in the 8th grade while still attending school, during this time I was balancing my school life with my work life. As well as joining the football team during my sophomore year in high school and seeing what kind of challenges it entailed. Both these experiences are a major reason why I feel as if allowing myself to undergo new adventures no matter the outcome allows me to experience life and those same experiences taught me so much discipline and transformed me into who I am today and were a foundation for success later on.
Carly was the one to ask me this sophisticated question and I felt like it was such a humbling question. I felt so passionate telling her how good it felt to challenge myself by doing things that would pose a challenge on top of the schedule I was already undergoing. Pertaining to my first job I told Carly what it was like balancing my school life with my work life, I told her after school ended around 2:20 I would travel by bus to another school which was about an hour away, and would work for about another 3-4 hours. The job was more like volunteer work since we actually couldn’t be paid until the summertime but the hours I did spend were to prepare me for when I officially did start the job in the summer. I was proud of myself for eventually landing the job and being able to buy things for myself and even help my parents out a little with bills and anything else they needed help with. This was an especially proud moment because while I was experiencing work life I got to meet so such incredible people like my boss and co-workers. It was pretty challenging going through school and going to work afterward but it was all worth it when I was able to put that I had experience on my resume for upcoming jobs in the future. Even though it was tough the opportunity opened up so many doors. When I took on this job I truly felt like it was going to be the most dreadful thing ever. But it only put me in a position for new jobs and the experience of having a job.
Aside from this moment, there was another moment I stepped out of my comfort zone and rose up to diversity and change. During my freshman year of high school after the football season was over, I decided to join the team during their offseason practice. The team was always training in the weight room and I wanted to use this opportunity to also keep myself in shape. My friend who was on the football team said it was a good idea to join. After joining and working out with the team for the rest of the off-season year, during my sophomore year the coach asked me about actually playing football. I had no intentions of playing when I decided to work out with the team but since I’ve bonded with everyone so much I decided I was going to become a student-athlete. I considered this to be another proud moment because I was now balancing my school life while also being a student-athlete. More responsibility came from this experience and I was responsible for maintaining high grades while also attending practices after school and doing homework late at night.
I was able to tackle this new challenge in my life and I became a more mature person because of it. This experience also taught me to realize that I actually enjoyed playing football and nothing made me happier than working together as a team with everyone to achieve one common goal. This influenced me in the future because I was leaning more towards group work in school and even working with people outside of school. These experiences lead me to realize that I consider the proudest moments of my life to be when I put myself out there and step into a new experience that will later benefit and influence the person I will become in the future. While being involved in sports I learned to be more disciplined and learned a sense of responsibility while staying focused in school and still showing up to practice every day. The significance of sports also taught me a life lesson such as how hard work breeds success and how a sense of accomplishment also tends to come from sacrifice no matter how big or small. Overall, I felt like the main point of it all was the fact that I put myself in the position to undergo experiencing life itself. That action and mentality taught me so much indefinitely and so I consider it the most teachable moment from when I didn’t think I would like the burden of having a job while in school to be so appreciative of the opportunity. Next time I want to ask Carly the same question and compare it to mine, I may learn a thing or two and that’s the beauty of it.
