William Blake.
The Chimney Sweeper describes the conditions of child labor like being forced up to unsanitary and dangerous chimneys to clean, in order to bring some kind of income for the family. In Blake’s poem the kids narrate the Angels saving them from the coffins and ” setting them free “. He’s commenting on how dependent on religion the people were that they saw it as ” the light at the end of the tunnel “. So no matter how much they may struggle currently, they have the idea that a better afterlife will be present. A similar concept in modern time is school. The idea is that although we may be struggling to get through the days and get good grades, the end result will be a successful career and financial stability. In both cases it is believed to be guaranteed but in reality there is no 100% assurance that it will happen.
