Journal #3: Next Steps…

My participation not only in the Community Service Project but college in general has encouraged me and actually made me seek out some of the available resources on campus. There are so many resources available for most of our student needs which makes college life more enriching and manageable. I, personally, made us of SACC (Student Academic Consulting Center) a lot this semester. I had some difficulties with my math class, mostly for not being adequately prepared for the course before it started. SACC made me more comfortable in this class and clarified certain topics and concepts I would not had been able to figure out on my own. The one-on-one help I received was helpful and in a way it released some of the stress that class might have brought about. Other resources I utilized was meeting with faculty members to discuss my current stands in college. From Mr. Medina, to some of my professors, meeting with them during their office hours truly allowed me to express my concerns with certain aspects of college. They all provided me with guidance and excellent recommendations to improve my experience in learning experience.

With respect to the Community Service Project specifically, my group members and I made extensive use of some of the library resources. We manage to find a non-profit organization that fit well with thither of us and we are looking forward to actually volunteer. The library, for me, was the best place to study and do my assignments during this entire semester. It is one of the few places where I can truly focus on homework and study efficiently. Overall, my experience during my first semester of college has been good, with a few difficulties managing my time efficiently but it has been a truly enriching experience. In the next three years I see my self in a better position when it comes to time managements, hopefully having landed one or two internships, and on the right track towards meeting my graduation requirements.

Journal #2: What does it mean to serve your community?

To serve your community means to be actively engaged in projects that seek to aid the ones in need or solve a major problems within your community. My role at Baruch College is to do just this. Find a way to aid fellow classmates and peers and work with others to better our experiences in college, and furthermore, our education. The Honors program definitely makes serving your community a must. This is a good thing because it encourages you to go out there and make a difference not only for yourself but for others also. As a productive member of society, you sometimes have to think way beyond your personal interests and take into consideration what your community actually needs and why.

The “culture of service” the Honors program promotes makes one engage in projects that one wouldn’t engage in otherwise. This opens the doors to many opportunities and makes one more culturally aware, a significantly good quality to have when living in such diverse community.  Being part of the Honors program, therefore, gives you a great advantage by taking you out of your comfort zone and exposing you to ideas and problems you were not aware of before through community service. Programs like these help build the leadership skills and the cultural awareness you need in today’s world. We can also attribute this program the building of our future leaders and even activists. This is such an important thing because it shapes our future, and in a way it ensures a future that does not lack leadership and cultural relevance.

Journal #1: Where have you been and where are you going?

Living in a different country for more than half of my life has definitely been an experience that has shaped who I am today. Growing up in Guatemala gave me a certain set of ideals and values that I would’t have otherwise. I value hard work, dedication and success. These three things are what I hope to stick to or achieve throughout my life. My Dad has been my role model since I can remember. He’s a hardworking man who has given his family all they need and more no matter what sacrifices he had to make along the way. Being part of my family’s first generation to go to college there’s a lot expected from me, and I am not willing to disappoint. Both my parents raised me with great morals and values and I just hope to make them proud.

I am aware that college will be challenging and that it require me to go out of my comfort zone sometimes. I know that the next four years will demand a lot from me and expose me to ideas and things I haven’t been exposed to before. This is exciting but at the same time a bit overwhelming. College, at one point, seemed a bit like a dream to me. Now that I have the opportunity to actually be here I hope to take full advantage of it. I also hope to find a way to manage my time adequately and not forget what is really important for me, my family and my closed ones.
