I found something on the BBC news website it’s an article with excerpts of a Congolese student who describes the different path her life has taken now that she is able to go to school. The excerpts describe how she and her sister lost their parents at an early age, were taken in by strangers and then abandoned again at the age of nine. They began living on the streets and working for women at local markets for change to buy food. She never went to school and had to care for a younger twin sister who would eventually die, uneducated, homeless and hungry. In class we discussed dependence, attention, innocence, and time with parents as some of the important aspects of childhood. I found these excerpts interesting because this story is one shared around the world by many who are less fortunate. With education, a new home, and family structure she now says she is experiencing the childhood she never had. It appears that this young lady and others like her would agree with our concepts of what childhood is.
