The Status of Childhood

February 13, 2011 by matthewbodh

Childhood has changed greatly from when I grew up as a kid. Children today are now immersed in so much technology that it is changing the way they learn and interact with other children. Children are now as technologically advanced as most adults with their use of Blackberrys, Iphones, and other smart phones. Not only does this new technology benefit the child, it can also be detrimental.  Often times we hear news stories about children sending each other sexual pictures and other inappropriate content. Technology is something that children should be able to use, but it should be monitored by an adult if possible.

Children’s  television shows today are more and more resembling those that you would see an adult watching. Many of the same story lines and plots are played by child actors. These shows that can be seen on the Disney Channel and in “children’s movies” are teaching children to behave more like adults. Children today are growing up too fast and following the new fashions and trends that they see on television.

The years of being a child are continually shrinking. Children are growing up with every advance in technology. Seeing a 7 year old texting on a Blackberry is something you thought wouldn’t even be possible 10 years ago. There will be a point when distinguishing between an adult and child will not be as easy as it seems. Children now wearing adult clothes and makeup is only the beginning of things to come.
