The Status of Childhood Today

February 13, 2011 by Priscilla Santana

Today the status of childhood is dwindling down more and more. What we used to know as childhood, with time has been decreasing, its like the age of childhood is being skipped directly to Adolescence.  Personally I feel as if the media is not necessarily responsible for creating this attitude rather they are responsible for supporting the idea of children growing up faster than they are cherishing their childhood years.

Disney channel is a perfect example of media who supports “grown children.” what it means  to say “grown children,” is children who are 11-13 using makeup, wearing mini skirts, belly shirts, and hair styles that adults usually do. In the following link you will find a clip of a TV show, which incorporates the previous statement.

The above clip, shows a young girl no more than 7 years old who pretends to be Hannah Montana styling a wig, lipstick, and adult like clothes. why is it okay for such young girls to grow up so quick?

Media and clothes go hand in hand. The media keeps everyone up to date with what styles are out, what the famous stars are wearing, etc. Young boys and girls should slowly grow up and burn their stages at their appropriate time. In the clip below, young artist Willow Smith at 10 years old has a music video in which, all the young boys and girls in the video are wearing outrageous outfits, extensions of different rare colors, and focusing on having perfect hair. At the age of 10 one should be focusing in school, not what hair styles are in or not.

In short, Media is there to entertain; but there are certain things that maybe should be kept out the media. Lets remember this posting does not refer to everyone, this is in some cases, not all.
