Benefits of Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research is used for investigation of basic cells which develop organisms. The cells are grown in laboratories where tests are carried out to investigate fundamental properties of the cells.
The controversy surrounding stem cell research led to an intense debate about ethics. Up until the recent years, the research method mainly focused on Embryonic Stem Cells, which involves taking tissue from an aborted embryo to get proper material to study.
I believe that in spite of using an embryonic stem cell, which can be argued as taking an unborn life, this type of research can serve the greater good of society. The potency or the cells’ ability to differentiate into different cell types shows capacity for these cells to replace existing faulty cells and cure many diseases like Parkinson’s disease.
Disorders in people, and more specifically genetic disorders, is uncontrollable and happens randomly. Many of these such as down syndrome and Turner syndrome are disorders that individuals have since birth. It is unfair for these people to live their lives in distress and impaired. Stem cell research is a possible solution to cure or mitigate these disorders and enrich the lives of millions of people.
