20 points: Attendance and Participation
10 – Attendance and conduct:
Students are expected to attend class to the best of their ability. Because much of the learning in the course will come from class discussions and activities, it is important that you arrive to class on time and remain until the end.
If you have 3 or more unexcused absences, you will automatically be penalized in your participation grade. An absence will be counted as excused if written documentation is provided demonstrating the reason for the absence. If you are more than 5 minutes late for 3 classes, it will be counted as an absence.
Laptops are permitted in class, but points will be deducted if you are distracted (or distract your classmates) as a result of using your laptops. Other distracting behavior includes chatting with classmates, working on other material, and sleeping/dozing off in class. Please refrain from using your cellphones in class.
Class participation includes attending all classes prepared, arriving on time, paying attention to lectures, and participating in discussions, groupwork and writing assignments.
All students should come to class having read the material assigned for that day. Students are expected to participate in discussions about the readings. Occasionally, there will be in class assignments, such as quizzes and short essays, based on the readings. These will count towards your participation grade.
25 points: Midterm
There will be an in-class midterm (March 21st) that will cover all readings and class material up until that point. Details will be discussed in class.
30 points: Blog Assignments
Throughout the semester, there will be individual and group assignments that you will be required to post online . These assignments may include oral presentations/discussions of your posts, and will often require additional research as well as reflections on the readings.
Throughout the semester, there will be both in-class and homework assignments that will be based on class discussions, reading assignments, and additional research.
25 points: Final
Scheduled during finals week (May 23rd, 1-3 PM). Most likely will be a take home exam due on date of final.
