Chapter 11

In education, one can easily agree that inorder for students to successfully learn the curriculum, teachers are needed. However, why don’t teachers get respect and have a say? Teachers are being neglected and often times, not able to voice their opinions. As we all know, the government are the ones who decide what students should learn and what thet “think” students ought to learn. However, in my opinion, teachers are the people who know what are student’s weaknesses and strengths are. Therefore, in order to teach students effectively, teacher’s opinions need to be counted for. For example, if a student stumbles on certain material that the government require it’s studets to learn, teachers are the only people who can help the student. Most importantly, unlike the government, teachers observe each student individually. Which means if a teacher continues to see that there are number of students who stumbled on the same topic, the teacher can adjust her schedule ad spend more time in that certain topic. Whereas, the government can’t. Therefore, if teachers were able to voice their opinions, do you think that our education system wpuld of been better?

I think forming the “National Education Association” was a good idea because teachers are not given enough positive attention. We all know that teachers have to work really hard but are not being paid enough for it. teachers often times deal with hundred of students a day, along with correct assignments as well as absenses problems. Yet, instead of appreciating what teachers have to do, government wants to lower their salary and reject teachers opinions. We all know that to protest requires a lot of time and strength. Most importantly, having the thought that Thier jobs might be in jeopardy if they protest will definitely make the whole idea of protesting seem less important. Therefore, forming an association for all the teachers will definitely show a sense of unity. Most importantly, having representatives would allow teachers to strive for more rights to be gained. However, for an organization to work effectively, it requires devotion as well as dedication. Do you think that teachers would continue to fight with the stress from teaching as well as knowing that they might
lose Their job?

Chapter 10

I strongly disagree with the whole idea of having everything based on these standardize exams. I understand why government would implement this idea; it can clearly show whether the students are actually understanding this material or not by the score. I do agree with that but only to a certain extend. To say that these test scores will determine whether a teacher is teaching correctly or a student is learning sounds a little ridiculous. The government needs to understand that some students may not have good test taking skills. One of the main reasons is because of the emphasis that is being placed on these exams can add on to a student’s nervousness; which results in getting a bad score. for example, in high school, students are required to take the SAT in order to be accepted into a certain college. SAT had such a great impact on students like me who wanted to go to a good college. Therefore, I was enrolled into a SAT preparation class which my mother had pay thousands of dollars for. In the end, I continued to get the scores which I did not expect to get because it was low. However, I was a A student in my high school and my grade point average was in the 90s. What does that say about the SAT score? Although the grade point average is considered by the colleges, but SAT scores weights heavier in determining whether a student is qualify or not. For students who receive As and have worked hard in the four years of high school, is it fair to say that a student is not qualified because of the SAT?

I believe that students who need special care and attention should be have their own home rooms. However, one again, to a certain extend. Instead of being with students who share similar traits, they should be able to learn with other students. One of the reasons is because just like everyone else, they are curious to learn new things as well as wanting to feel like they belong in this society. A lot of times, people often think that they are different and are not capable of learning, but I think they are wrong. They might learn in a slower pace but they are definitely capable of interacting with other students as well as learning. In my experience, students who needed special attention were placed in my class. They were just like any other students who sat down and listened to the teacher explaining the class material. The only different I would have to say was that they had paras who assisted them. Most importantly, students with disabilities already know that they are some what “different”. Therefore, it is important to encourage these students and allow them to interact with everyone. By being placed in a classroom full of students which they might not be able to relate to, do you think it will benefit students who need extra attention in their future?

Chapter 9

When children are young, they do not have worries about life and their future because pressure is not often placed on them. However, with our economy, as the child gets older, he or she begins to see the obstacles they are going to face when they enter the work force. Therefore, education is highly emphasized. As mentioned in the book, a child who enters High School is obligated to be trained for the job market. I stand by this because aside from education being important, gaining the knowledge of how the economy works will definitely enable the students to be ahead of the game. Kids nowadays who are young can easily use a computer or text with a phone, this shows that children who are exposed to these things are capable of learning at a young age. Also I feel that in today’s society, it is constantly changing, therefore by teaching students at a young age will allow them to learn to adjust to the changes. Most importantly, being new to young adulthood, it would be a great way to let them experience the different side of the world where stress is introduced. However, does it sound unfair that children at such a young age are being exposed to such stress?

I think extracurricular activities are a great way for students to bond and release some stress. As most students will agree, being in school for eight hours straight where they have to sit in desks and listen to teachers’ lesson plans are not very enjoyable. However, providing things to do where students will enjoy will create a balance for a student. When I was in High School, teachers did not make lessons enjoyable because I felt like they were only trying to get the information across. Often times, I would fall asleep and just hope the weekends came sooner. However, I then joined the volley ball club which allowed me to relief some stress and look forward to go to school. Although we did not have sport teams in our school, we had math team and chess team. Therefore, students became drawn to these clubs because they were allow to compete with other schools, which creates incentives. However students often time get too focused on these activities where they are falling behind on their school work. Should there be certain limitations on these extracurricular activities where students can ensure that they keep a balance between the two?

Chapter 7

United States is known to be a diverse country, people with different nationalities and cultures are basically the definition of U.S. Many immigrants who come from different countries wish they can live better lives in U.S. A perfect example would be the Chinese immigrants. Although China continues to grow and has become industrialized, families from China continue to wish that they can come to U.S to improve their family living as well as providing a better family standards for future generations. Although I was born in U.S, I lived most of my childhood years in Hong Kong. When my mom decided to move our whole family to U.S, she was afraid because not only was she not familiar with New York, but she was a single mother who had to raise three young children by herself. One of the main reasons as to why she’d decided to make such a choice was because of education. Unlike U.S, Hong Kong does not have as many opportunities and choices of schools as U.S does. My brothers had a lot of stress because it was very competitive. Although, Chinese immigrants were not given as many opportunities as they should in the 1800s, but soon enough with the constant fighting, they were given the opportunities based on the 14th amendment in the late 1800s. However, should China appreciate the fact that U.S created many opportunities for Chinese immigrants which they couldn’t provide?

One of the problems in the mid 1800s was that U.S had a great of trouble letting immigrants enter into the country. Therefore, it wasn’t a surprise that U.S wanted to “convert” immigrants into believing and living by the U.S culture. It sounds bizarre because I do not understand how one can forced culture into another person’s life. I believe it is a good idea to expose the American culture to immigrants, but forcing it is a bit too much. An example would be when I came to U.S at age 8, I was very unfamiliar with my surroundings because I was not use to it. My teachers didn’t force me to believe in anything that I didn’t choose to. However, as I was growing up , I gradually began to live a life style where many Americans would considered “normal” where my mother would not agree to. My point is that, I was not forced to live a certain way, it was because of my environment as well as experiences which led to this result.  Also, People naturally decide to change because they’re doing what’s best for them. Therefore, if anyone feels that a certain trait in the culture is beneficial to them, they would do it naturally. However, children who are born in the U.S of different nationality, should they have to worry about their ancestors’ culture being lost as future generations are born?

Chapter 5

Although one can say that racial segregation is over but to be honest… is it? As we all know, back then African Americans had to fight really hard to gain freedom. One of the examples was Charles Ray tried to enter school. However, many whites protested against this action. Slowly, public schools were formed where African Americans and Whites were allowed to attend together. However, bringing back to the question earlier, up until this day, is there not any type of separation at all? Even though we live in a society where everyone is equal, there are times when separation do exist. An example would be when I was in High School, Many cliques were formed based on their culture as well as nationality. I did not think people were being racist or negative towards other people, the reason was because everyone in the group felt they all had something in common. Even though when a student enters a setting where it was much more diverse, often times, separation surfaces. An example of such separation would be college courses. Courses such as Asian Studies, African American Studies or Hispanic Studies, Doesn’t these courses present a sense of separation?

As read in the chapter, Religion was emphasized greatly on its people. In the 19th century, U.S government felt that it was their duty to convert everyone to its belief. In today’s society, students have a choice to practice their own religion and not forced to say the Pledge of Allegiance that is on everyday before class. However, I think it is unnecessary to have students say it everyday. U.S is known for its diversity and I do not believe that by knowing how to recite the Pledge of Allegiance will show that you appreciate and is considered being a good American. Instead we should use the diversity that exist and take advantage of it. Back then, Christianity was viewed as the trait of being a good citizen. Does being in a different religion determine whether one is good or bad?

Chapter 4

I support common school and I think it is a great idea because it offers education to all people in the society. Most importantly, it gives lower class a chance to climb up the social ladder and advance themselves. Often times, it is hard for a person to earn a higher income with the lack of resources and tools. However, I think with education, it is possible to change a person’s life and future. Although common school was meant to promote equality but often times, one can tell that it doesn’t. One example would be although everyone receives the same education, a lower class student might have to deal with financial problems whereas a person from the upper class don’t. Therefore, do you think every student will be treated equally or will it just bring the social classes closer?

I believe the federal government needs to step into the education system and seek some control. However, I also think the state government should step in as well. A perfect example would be education today, the New York education system has its flaws and needs to create a better curriculum for students. This responsibility should be put on the Federal government where they should create a standard curriculum for all the schools as a way of forming a foundation. This will benefit students greatly because it will allow them to be up to par compare to other schools. Also, this will allow the schools to decide whether they want their students to learn in a more advance level based on the standards that were given by the government.

Chapter 3

Webster believed strongly that children are to learn moral values through education. Most importantly, to start and continue to be loyal to their country. However, I disagree with his way of thinking. The one important reason as to why Webster’s belief would not work in the 21th century is because we are living in a democratic society. Therefore, opinions matter. I do not think that one should learn moral values through education. I believe that moral values ought to be taught by parents. When a child is born before entering school, parents would often teach their children what is correct and what is not depending on what parents themselves believe. However, once a child enters school, teachers are there to prepare them and to ensure that students are ready to be independent. However, would it be beneficial for a child to learn moral values through school instead of from his or her parents in society today?

Jefferson believed that education should be a tool and knowledge for improving a person’s sense of morality. Also, education helps a person grow. One example would be by learning how to read and write, one can express his or her feelings freely and provides a foundation for future leaders. I also agree with Jefferson that every person should have the right to reason. I do not think that powerful leaders are people who were forced to think a certain way, they are the people who reasoned, expressed how they felt and did not changed their minds because others thought differently. However, could learning moral values from parents be the reason that caused crime rates to go up or why our economy is the way it is?
