What does it mean to serve your community?

I think a huge part of being a Baruch Scholar is being given the privilege of giving back to the community and the opportunity to widen our horizons. My role as a Baruch Scholar is to challenge myself, my education, and overall outlook on life. To me, being a Baruch Scholar means you get to focus on your education, and future goals, meanwhile giving back to your community and connecting with yourself, as well as the things you are passionate about. There is no greater gift we can be given than to focus on bettering ourselves, and others all at once.

Serving my community means giving back and helping those who are much less fortunate than I. The fact that community service is a required part of my education here at Baruch College excites me, because it will allow me to enrich the lives of others, as well as my own. I believe that by participating in different community service opportunities, I will not only help others, but I will be gaining experience, and knowledge on things I never knew before. The culture of service the Honors Program promotes is highly related to this because the purpose of us giving back to our community is to say thank you. We, as honors students, receive a lot of assistance, and care, which is precisely what we aim to give when serving our community. We are encouraged to challenge ourselves academically, but also to take action and working towards a better community for ourselves, and all those that surround us.

I am also excited to give back to the community. I agree that it is very enriching and humbling— it will allow us to greater appreciate the privileges that we have as Baruch Scholars, such as the scholarship and the stipend for studying abroad. I appreciate your point about balancing school and completing service work. It is definitely important to take a break from the inevitable academic stress, and getting involved in the community is a great way to do so.

I really like how you wrote about the services that we receive as Baruch Scholars and how it is important for us to serve others with the same if not greater fervor. Community service is a vital part of our role as Baruch Students and this is a great way to look at it.
