In the book, “Principles of New Media Art” by Manovich, I found it very interested since I didn’t have clear what was New Media Art. With the first chapter of the book I could understand what New Media is, how it works and the impact in has on our culture and on us. During the reading, they were more than one passage and principle that call my attention such as the “modularity” and “automation”. How everything can be created from scratch and almost anything you can imagine can be done and created in the computer thought New Media Arts. It’s surprising how the internet is basically based on New Media Arts.
The passage that stands more to me was: “In a postindustrial society, every citizen can construct her own custom lifestyle and “select” her ideology from a large (but not infinite) number of choices. Rather than pushing the same objects/information to a mass audience, marketing now tries to target each individual separately” (Manovich, 42). I choose this passage because it demonstrated that we are all different, which I think is the purpose of New Media Arts. This passage for me best describe what is new media art, ant its represent by the principle four “variability”.
One of the purposed of variability consists in customized the user preference. It allows the user to feel important since whatever they look is customized by their preference, by adapting the search depending on the key word you use, and how pages can discover what you prefer and like by doing some questions, or depending what feature we choose first. It also means that when we all have the same project, everyone will have a different one, since thats one of the good consequence because it allow us express ourselves. For me this was surprising. This principle allows new media art to be unique, and to show that we are all different and have different preference. Variability allows everyone who it’s behind the computers express themselves without being judges, letting everyone be unique rather than be a prototype of another. Showing that we are “variables” rather than “constant”.
