Lesson 21: Define Success
This passage was fairly confusing. I feel like he did not necessarily answer the question at all which was define success. He says time is the definition of success- the time to do your work. This doesn’t really make sense to me, and then he goes on to say that you’re going to be working a lot and you will be depressed to then you will be working less and still depressed, which I don’t think correlates to success? I’m sure there is a way of understanding this passage though I think I just disagree. I think success is relatively simple, you have money or have an excessive joy for life you have succeeded. Though once I read to the end it made a little more sense. You are working as an artist to create more spare time for yourself? I think that’s the message he was trying to get across though I am still not entirely sure. I think success is subjective though. I could look at my friend whose dream was to become a lawyer, and now they have achieved that and are working countless hours but making an abundance of money and that is their idea of succeeding. That’s not necessarily my dream but they are still successful in their realm. Though my other friend could have always dreamed of having a family, and now they are happily married with children and that fulfills their dreams of success. I am not sure if maybe in artists terms, success is measured by how much time you have, or maybe the whole idea is that success is subjective to each person and this was just his definition. This passage definitely left me puzzled but I liked the thoughts behind it. It left me questioning my own definition of successful, and would success even exist without the comparison of others? I don’t know.
