I enjoyed the beginning of this documentary. I think it’s interesting to see the early responses the public and artists had to remixes because now I feel like they are heavily normalized and a part of music culture. I will say though, I see both sides to the complaints of remixing and mashing up songs together. It’s definitely a fine line between copying and creative expression, though it makes me curious how remixing works these days because it happens all the time. I think it’s totally fair for an artist to feel violated when another artist uses their original music to create a totally new song. Though I will say, typically artists who create these remixes are creating a totally different sound and the other music is merely just inspiration for them. Sounds come in so many different ways, I feel like the music Girl Talk was producing sounded completely different from the original songs and had an entirely different vibe as well. That form of creativity I think should be encouraged and I feel like at the time, artists were very particular about their works since there was no social media coverage on it or anything. I agreed with the guy when he asked the copyright lawyer if copyrights were limiting his creativity. I think it was a limitation on someone’s creativity and sharing ideas and sounds in music has been happening since music first came about. I am all for creative expression especially when it comes to music so I enjoy the music Girl Talk was producing and defend them.
