The passage titled “You,” caught my eye in this short reading. It was one of the first titled passages so initially reading it, I was a little bit confused but after reading through the rest of the text, I was able to understand it a little better. The overall meaning in McLuhan’s text is how this new age of media will forever impact and change our world, which he was correct on. The passage titled You though, focuses on each individual directly, and how these certain forms of media will impact each one of us. I think what he was attempting to get at, was how media internally affects us, rather than it just being an external source. He emphasizes this idea that media environments actively shape the individual, whether that be physically, mentally, or emotionally. I also feel like just the way the text was written, despite it being written many years ago, makes it seem like he is directly speaking to just me. It did not feel like this was a text written for all, which I imagine a lot of individuals who have read this felt. McLuhan talks about how our human experiences and mind are altered through this new medium, which I agree with. I am not sure the type of person I would be without all this new media. It has influenced so many of my decisions, altered my thinking processes, and so much more. I wonder what type of opinions and different types of perceptions on life I would have without this medium. This was definitely a tough read and makes you really think, but overall challenged my preexisting beliefs surrounding the new media.
