Sehaj Antigone Discussion (10-15 min)
Will turn it over to Sehaj so he can talk about some things he noticed and was thinking about in Antigone.
Reading Primary vs. Secondary Sources (45 min)
Let’s practice reading someone’s secondary source. Who has one to share? We will do it together on the screen and on our own while checking in every once in a while.
Practice reading secondary sources: what is the central concept? what is the “so what”? how are either of these relevant to your project?
Let’s do the same with someone’s transcript or notes for their interview or observation. I have slightly different questions here, though.
Practice analyzing transcript: what is the “so what” of each interview or observation response? If you had to name it, what would it be? When you add it all up together, what patterns do you see? What is relevant to your project?
Take the next 20 minutes and try to answer the above questions about 1 of your secondary sources and your primary source. Post your responses on this Google Doc.
Work on Synthesis Paragraph (20-30 min)
Choose a sentence or passage from your secondary source or transcript/notes that you find interesting or notable. How could you build a paragraph around it? How could it contribute to understanding something about your research question?
Get started on the Synthesis Paragraph assignment due by tonight. USE TIME WISELY. I’m here to answer questions.
We went over quoting and paraphrasing here: Tuesday, October 25 Lesson Plan – ENG 2100, Fall 2022: Knowledge Soup (cuny.edu)
We went over using signal words and phrases here: November 10 Lesson Plan – ENG 2100, Fall 2022: Knowledge Soup (cuny.edu)
We will talk more about using a documentation style (e.g., MLA, APA, IEEE, CSE, Chicago) on Thursday, November 17. For now (and for the assignment due tonight), just find some way to make it clear where you are citing information (e.g., a page number, the author’s name, a link).
On this Google Doc, give some thought to the Blankenship reading you did for today. What stasis do you think your research project is in? Why?
Then, write one thought/feeling about quoting/paraphrasing: something you are stuck on or unsure about, something you feel like is going well, a question you have about writing with sources from a big picture perspective of your overall argument, etc. Whatever comes to mind about writing and writing with sources that you’ll be doing for your research project.
Next Time (2-5 min)
-Complete Synthesis Paragraph assignment due tonight
-Review Blankenship reading, as we will spend more time on that next class.
-Update Labor Log for this week (this is important to do! will be helpful for end of semester paper)
-Work on Research Project (first draft due Nov 22)
