Research Question and Proposal Activity (20-30 min)
Let’s continue working on this.
Introduce Research Plan activity (on Blackboard underneath the Research Question and Informal Proposal activity)
Practice Observation or Interview (45 min)
I printed out everything. Let’s practice it:
- Grab a “Primary Research Steps” handout
- Grab either the Observation Consent Form and Protocol or the Interview Consent Form and Protocol. Choose to practice with the method you plan on using: interview or observation
- Grab a partner
- Grab some kind of device you can record with (it’s okay if you don’t have one or if one is not charged). Let’s check in on that. Open up a device you have. If you have an iPhone, Voice Memos can record. Other smartphones likely have a similar app (e.g., on Androids I believe there is Sound Recorder). If using a tablet or computer, there are also apps that come right with the device. A PC that runs Windows should have Voice Recorder. Macs should have Voice Memos (like an iPhone).
- Using the Primary Research Steps and also the Consent Form and Protocol, do an abbreviated version of your observation or interview with a partner (do about one-third of the time–5 minutes–for the observation; do about one-third of the interview questions). As you do it (and we are gonna do a demonstration now), ask follow up questions! Here is a good resource for that: 6 Surprising Ways to Write Better Interview Questions (thewritepractice.com). I especially like how they mention “open-ended questions” and “dumb questions”. So, follow up with things like, “what do you mean by that?” or “can you say a little bit more about that?” or “how does that make you feel?” or “can you explain why you think you feel that way?”, etc.
- Go ahead and come back by TIME.
Assessment Letters, Grade Boosts, Info Analysis Argument, etc. (10-15 min)
Let’s check in on how things are going. I emailed you all your grade statuses. Questions?
I have some thoughts, too, on things going forward.
If time, Evaluation of Secondary Scholarly Sources (10-15 min; may push to Tuesday, Nov 8)
Let’s look over the Lisa Ede quick reading due on November 1. How is this different from Love’s heuristic questions, lateral reading, or frame checking?
What is another consideration for Ede that might be different?
Do you know how to do each step? Where might you be stuck on figuring out how to find some of these answers?
Next Time (2-5 min)
- Submit Information Analysis Argument draft by tomorrow (Nov 4)
- Update Labor Log by tonight (Nov 3)
- Read “Using Sources” from textbook
- Get Research Plan completed by end of class on Nov 8
