Dropbox Folder Check-in (5 min)

I think I have this all set up now. Log in to Dropbox here (click on “Log In To Dropbox” on left toward bottom): Dropbox – The City University of New York (cuny.edu)

Use CUNYFirst login and password–the username is FIRSTNAME.LASTNAME##@login.cuny.edu, where ## = last two digits of your EMPLID.

You should be able to see the folder “Information Literacy Study Audio Files + Transcripts.” If you don’t, click on “Shared.”

Transcription: Lecture, Demo, Practice (30 min)

Let’s talk transcription. When analyzing an interview or observation, it is much easier to have the writing to stare at rather than listening and then constantly playing it back. This is especially true when you are working with multiple interviews or observation rather than just one. So, think about it in terms of meaning. What is meaningful? You don’t have to worry so much about “space-fillers” like “Um” or “Uhh”, etc. Though, you might want to note things like that if you find them meaningful. For instance, if someone takes a really long pause before answering a question, or in the middle of a response, it might be notable to indicate “Long Pause.”

More than anything, though, is that you want the words. So you have to play a little bit at a time

Okay, let’s try it out. I’m going to play a clip. Tell me when to pause it so you have enough to remember to try to write out. Let’s keep doing that.

Okay, let’s practice. Does anyone have an audio file of your observation or interview yet? Is it on Dropbox? We can practice with that as a class or you all can try yourselves. Let’s do the first minute of it.

Evaluating Sources and Scholarly Sources (20-30 min)

A big part of your paper will be using scholarly sources. So let’s talk why that is important, how to do that, and get some practice doing it.

On November 1, we talked about ways to find sources (see second half of lesson plan): November 1 Lesson Plan – ENG 2100, Fall 2022: Knowledge Soup (cuny.edu)

Take the next 5 minutes and follow those steps. Paste a source here that you just found now or have found previously

Let’s laterally read!

Let’s consider its scholarly merits, too.

Let’s talk about first steps in reading it and taking notes for writing.

Research Plan (30 min)

Let’s take some time to work on your Research Plan. Everyone who turned in the Research Question activity got feedback from me.

Learning Community Event Discussion, Nov 10 (5 min)

Let’s talk about this briefly and what is expected of people who did this for a grade boost (i.e., Antigone or Memory and Sense lecture reflection and discussion questions)

Follow up questions!!!!!!! What do you mean by that? Can you say more? Why do you feel that way? Etc.

Next Time (2-5 min)

  • Research Plan, today
  • Transcription is due Nov 14: let’s check in on this
  • Read the Lisa Ede reading on Perusall (we will talk about using and writing with sources on Nov 10 after LC event discussion)
  • Update Labor Log
  • LC event people: have questions prepared and be ready to lead discussion for Nov 10
  • I’ll have food, gonna do pastries and bagels and stuff. Do people do caffeine? Do you want coffee or tea or anything?
  • Assessment Letters for Information Analysis Drafts were due today. I can do extension. But you need to get it to other people well before they might turn in revision before end of semester. I would say no later than December 1.
