Writing Groups, Formal Assessment, and Peer Response (45-60 minutes)
Let’s go over how our writing group days will go, some ground rules for peer response as spelled out in the Peer Response document you read for homework for today, and also look ahead toward what is expected for the Formal Assessment and how to set that up.
After that 10 minutes of set-up, we will get into our writing groups and do some peer response. Then we will check back in and confirm we know what to do for September 28.

Final Check-in
Make sure you are all set up with who you are writing your formal assessment for, which is due September 28.
Once you submit your final draft, also send it to the person doing a Formal Assessment on your writing.
Let’s also check in one more time on the draft + cover letter due by tonight.
Episodes 2 and 3 of Nice White Parents (20 minutes)
- Take 5 minutes and go back through your notes on episodes 2 and 3 on Nice White Parents. Think about what got you most interested/engaged in each episode, what questions you are left with (okay–even encouraged!–to lean into what you don’t know rather than what you feel confident knowing), and anything else you want to share.
- Anyone want to start with comments or questions that are at the forefront of their minds?
- Let’s get going with some questions! I’m going to have more questions about episode 3 since we already had an asynchronous discussion about episode 2:
- This episode was really forthright about what we might call framing or assumptions. As in, “what perspective is foregrounded” and “what do we assume to be true when we make statements or ask questions?” Another term that is useful is “pre-supposition.” So, what were the assumptions about “integration” that this episode calls into question? How does it make you feel about segregation and integration in context of how schools are reformed historically in for IS 293/SIS?
- Why were the White parents appeased? (see around 20:00 and 32:00 about how school boards and others consistently got nervous about these parents’ comfort). Were there good reasons for this? Were there not-so-good reasons for this? Is the only “good” reason also bad at the same time? Is that possible?
- Why are schools “immune to long term memory”? (around 34:00)
- Is choice for schools bad? Or does it depend? How about in the context of what led to down enrollments at SIS? (see around 39:00)
Survey (20 minutes)
Prof. Blankenship is here for the first of two surveys you will complete if you decided to participate in the study Prof. Blankenship told you about during the first week.
Close Out (2-5 minutes)
-Got some time getting some readers for our writing! And talked through more of Nice White Parents.
-Make sure you submit your first draft + cover letter of Rhetorical Analysis to Blackboard by 11:59pm tonight.
-For Tuesday, September 28, see the schedule and Labor Instructions for that day’s work. Another episode of NWP, a R/L post and/or comment, your Formal Assessment, a Time Management activity, and the Rhetorical Analysis, Draft 2 + Cover Letter guidelines to read through.
