Below is information on the schedule followed by the schedule itself for the course, subject to change (check regularly!)

Course Rhythm

Typically (**but not always! check the schedule**) the rhythm of our hybrid course will be:

  • Tuesdays: asynchronous work due on Tuesdays (i.e., reading, listening, writing, composing). WE DO NOT MEET at all (neither virtually nor in person). Since we do not meet, you’ll notice that there may be more writing/work due on Tuesdays compared to Thursdays.
  • Thursdays: in-person classes on Thursdays (usually with asynchronous work also due) at 9:55am-11:35am in VC 7-205.
  • Saturdays: By end of day Saturday, you’ll be expected to update your Labor Log for that week, submit the Labor Journal entry do that week, and to have submitted at least one Labor Post. If you know you are not going to work on Saturday (or Friday and Saturday, etc.) you are welcome to submit these materials earlier than Saturday. However, if you know you will be working as late as Saturday, you must make sure everything in Labor materials is reflected in that work.

Finally, around midterm, we will meet individually to check in on how things are going and to plan for rest of term together. More on this later, as well.

Lesson Plans

To view the lesson plan for the day (and to access possible activities/links/etc. for that day’s lesson), click the date in the schedule to navigate to the lesson plan webpage (e.g., click “Thursday, August 26”). Lesson plans will be live by a few minutes before the beginning of class–though they may sometimes be live a few hours or a day earlier. Lesson plans are useful so you can follow along what is happening that day. Being logged into Discord is also helpful for in-class activities.

Read/Listen/Watch/Write/Compose

For all reading, listening, watching, writing, and composing there will be **separate** labor instructions on how to approach them. These labor instructions are on Blackboard in a folder labeled by the due date within “Labor Instructions.” Go to the folder labeled with the date for the labor instructions for that day’s assignments.

Topics

Topics on the schedule just give you a hint about what the class/work will focus on that day.

Accessing Readings

To know where to find a reading/file or where to submit something, use the below key:

(Blackboard) = major assignments will be submitted here, but sometimes minor ones, too. Readings or other files that are copyrighted will also be stored here.

(Google Drive) = This will always be in relation to your Labor Logs (a Google Sheet) and your Labor Journal entries (a Google Doc).

(Discord) = Many shorter pieces of writing will be submitted to Discord, like Reading/Listening Posts. If virtual meetings are required, these will also happen on Discord.

Hyperlink = some readings could be embedded with a hyperlink right on the schedule on our Blogs @ Baruch (WordPress) website, which is where you are now.

Course Schedule

Week 1

Thursday, August 26

Reading/Listening/Watching/Writing/Composing Due: None

Topic(s): go over course syllabus, go over grading contract, go over weekly labor assignments (i.e., labor logs, labor journal entries, and labor Discord posts), podcast vote, work due for Tuesday (Aug 30), and Prof. Blankenship visit for introduction of study.

Saturday, August 28

**GO TO LABOR INSTRUCTIONS FOLDER ON BLACKBOARD FOR MORE INFORMATION ON BELOW**

Labor Note: As you get used to the course rhythm, I’ll give you some advice each week here in addition to the Labor Instructions on Blackboard. Each week on Saturday by 11:59pm, you will be expected to complete your Labor Log, your Labor Journal entry for the week, and at least one Labor Post. It is easiest to fill in your Labor Log as you go. The Labor Posts have to be done while you are doing labor on reading/listening/viewing/writing/composing for other assignments. The Labor Journal entry can be done closer to the deadline compared to the other labor assignments.

Reading/Listening/Watching/Writing/Composing Due:

  • Begin working on some of work due for August 30 (this will help you complete what is below).
  • Complete Labor Log for Week 1 by 11:59pm (Google Drive)
  • Submit Labor Journal entry for Week 1 by 11:59pm (Google Drive)
  • Submit at least one weekly Labor Post by 11:59pm (Discord)

Week 2

Tuesday, August 31

Reading/Listening/Watching/Writing/Composing Due:

**GO TO LABOR INSTRUCTIONS FOLDER ON BLACKBOARD FOR MORE INFORMATION ON BELOW**

Labor Note: Here is a week where there are a lot of bullet-points, but each bullet-point does not take that much time. Therefore, you might want to also get to work on what is due for September 2, which has some work that will take longer (e.g., the Reading/Listening Post on “How to Tame a Wild Tongue”).

Topic(s): Annotating reading, language supremacy, grading contract, podcast.

Thursday, September 2

Reading/Listening/Watching/Writing/Composing Due:

**GO TO LABOR INSTRUCTIONS FOLDER ON BLACKBOARD FOR MORE INFORMATION ON BELOW**

Labor Note: This week everyone will contribute a Reading/Listening Post. Each other week, not everyone will contribute one. You will contribute 4 overall, but may contribute up to 6 to higher your grade.

Topic(s): None

Thursday, September 9

Reading/Listening/Watching Due/Writing/Composing:

**GO TO LABOR INSTRUCTIONS FOLDER ON BLACKBOARD FOR MORE INFORMATION ON BELOW**

Labor Note: This will be our first time listening to the podcast we voted on. Start to think strategically about how you can get your listening done vs. your reading. For instance, I often listen to podcasts when doing chores (e.g., washing dishes) and while commuting. When I want to take a note, I take off my dish gloves, pause the podcast, shut off the water, and then take a note on my notes app on my phone (or, if I’m commuting, I just pause the podcast and take the note on my notes app).

Topic(s): rhetorical analysis, reading/listening post and commenting schedule, discuss podcast, writing process and practice
