One Question:

“Why are you wearing what you’re wearing?”

I plan to follow the “One Question” format for my audio-essay. I will not be doing much speaking in my audio-essay. I plan to ask students from a bunch of schools at my dorm, along with local workers in the dorm’s neighborhood, why they chose their clothes. As I’m a firm believer that the clothing we wear expresses our personalities and moods, I feel that the responses will be expository of the overall feeling of life at the dorm and in the surrounding area.

I’m particularly curious to see what kind of responses I will get out of the students in fashion-related majors, which there are many of at the dorm. (We share the building with LIM College, among others.)

I think most segments will be on the shorter side- 10-15 seconds- but I will also include longer ones if I feel that they’re significant. I will be using the camera on my phone to record the segments, and will be stringing them together on my Mac, probably in iMovie. I will need someone to help me record responses, though I think it should be pretty easy to find volunteers for this. I plan to gauge the overall feel of the responses when choosing music to play in the video’s background.

I think that I may change my “one question” to something more specific, like “Why did you choose those shoes?”. I think that it might be necessary to streamline the results to one thing that is more relatable, but I also don’t wont to narrow the question too much that I won’t expose very little about life by my dorm.

This is definitely an interesting question to ask considering how many LIM students dorm at 1760. The way I’m imagining it however, I don’t see a great variety in the responses you can get. That might be because I’m not too creative with my wardrobe or simply because I don’t give it much thought at all. Again, the LIM students would have more interesting responses but how interesting can they really be? The answer to that can only be determined when you start asking different people. Perhaps you should also ask how long it took them to figure out what to wear? There might be a correlation between how long it takes someone to put together an outfit and the reasoning behind the ensemble. Just a thought, but this sounds great! Good luck!

You may get many common or generic answers before interesting thoughtful answers come up. It’s not something I think too much about. It helps to be more specific, but it’s not necessary. You will have to be lucky or have to interview many people. It could turn out well if you stick with it, so good luck. Make sure the responses all connect to something, though I’m sorry if that’s obvious advice.

I think this is a really interesting idea! You might get better, more thought out responses if you narrow the question, though you won’t really know until you go out and interview people. Good luck!
