Just not that great
At around 50 seconds in to part 3 of Ira Glass on Storytelling, he talks about something really interesting. In the beginning, most of an artist’s work is not so good. They have good enough taste to know that their work is not as good as i can be though, and they may get discouraged. Ira Glass advises us to not give up and get past that point.
I know, when i listen to the comings of my radio show, that if i heard it on the radio i would probably turn the dial. And im trying to mae it better, but a sheer lack of experience is really whats hindering my project. I have to take this advice to heart and keep trying, even after this assignment is over, and that is the only way my future work willbe any better.
Thank you, Mr. Glass, for those kind words.

I also have the same concerns as you. I’m worried that my lack of experience might be the reason why my audio essay won’t be as good as it can be. But Ira Glass is right- we shouldn’t give up just because we don’t think we are good enough. I think that as we work on our essays and revise them, they will become better and better until the end product is something we are really happy with.
I think that even though we lack the experience, the fact that we have taste is a great thing. We can admit to ourselves that our work isn’t good and we can work at it to make it much better. It takes courage to stand up to yourself and admit that you can make better work. Not giving up would lead to a much better radio show, even if we are inexperienced. In our case, our slight flaws could also make it much more personal.
I also think these experiences, no matter how poor and embarrassing they may be, all adds up to our knowledge and pays off eventually in the long run. I agree it’s important not to give up just because you feel you don’t have what it takes because what you really need is the taste and experience as well as the ability to learn from it. I guess as long as we try our best, accepting the work as it is, is also part of learning and all we have to do is hope that someday, after plethora of experience, we will have something that we are satisfied with and can be proud of.
