Creative Remix

For my creative remix I will be creating a monopoly inspired game involving facts about different types of drugs and rehabilitation centers. I will create a short presentation explaining the game and how it works as well as having volunteers play it.

Displacement Post

I Dread the Rains

I dread the rains
When it pours in torrents,
My life becomes a nightmare
When my house turns a pond,

Muddy water gushes in-
Thick, brown and slimy-
Bringing with it an odour
That fills the whole house,

Terrace becomes our refuge
Till we are rescued
And lodged in a safe house-
A temporary one for a week or so,

Rescue boats ply for a week
Ferrying people to and fro;
To live on charities
Has become our tragic lot,

When the water recedes,
We return to our homes-
The ones that were ravaged
And reeking of malodour,

It takes many days
For the stink of the flood
To show us some sympathy
By ending its tenancy,

A week more of struggle
It takes for all of us
To bring the house back
To its old livable state,

It’s an unfailing routine
For us in the low-lying areas,
Civic People have let us down
Leaving us to our own fate,

I dread the rains
When the skies open up,
My life becomes a nightmare
When my house turns a pond.

Above is a poem I encountered a while back. I thought it would be a good fit for my post about Displacement because it shows how terrible and awful someone feels when the rains come. I interpreted it in my own way, and was reminded about the many displacements I have gone through and how they made me feel.

This clip is taken from the hit series “Breaking Bad”. In this Scene the main character Walter White finds out that he has lung cancer. This overwhelming scene shows his displacement as an individual as well as a father. He has to think about his life and about how he will support his family if he is to die. In the scene we see the different emotions that are going through his head as he is given the devastating news.

Displacement Within The Character Harry Potter (Harry Potter Book Series)

“ The Sorting is a very important ceremony because while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts…I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours.” (Professor McGonagall, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone)

This quote from the first book of the Harry Potter Series introduces the idea of displacement within the main character Harry Potter. As the Professor states in the quote, while the students attend the school Hogwarts, they will be placed into their “houses”. She states that these houses will be like their family over the next couple of years. This is important because the main character Harry, has never truly been apart of a loving family. He was orphaned as a child, and has been living with his Aunt and Uncle. Throughout his years of growing up, he was treated badly and was viewed upon them as being a burden rather than being a part of their family. Throughout his time in Hogwarts, Harry becomes friends with many kids and creates his own family at school. His sense of displacement comes in when it is time to go home for the holidays. While the other students are eager to go home to their families, Harry hates going back to his Aunt and Uncle. To him, his real home is at Hogwarts and feels as if he doesn’t belong with his Aunt and Uncle.
