Being apart of the 21st century, the change of how people write these days has changed drastically. The way of writing has become very informal from what it was, let’s say 10 years ago and when you compare it today; 10 years ago, people actually used punctuation in their text messages to make them sound formal, but now there’s no real punctuation when I would text my friends. The only real punctuation is when someone writes in all caps, which is an indication that they are either really excited or angry. In “We Learned to Write the Way We Talk,” a period no longer is a period that closes off a sentence, but it’s a way of showing that you’re mad, and majority of Gen Z is adapting to that. In today’s age, our writing amplifies our emotions, the way someone would speak to another person but through text. That example of the period shows someone that they are mad without having to physically express themself. Having those periods has a completely meaning to someone that’s in their 50’s compared to someone thats apart of Gen Z.
This brings me onto the fact that slowly each generation of humans are becoming disconnect with each other because each generation has their own way of expressing their saying through text. Once you start to build a habit of saying something like “LMAO” or “ngl” and you use it to text someone that’s not up to date with all these sayings and combination of letters, it builds a disconnect. Yes, you obviously can teach them what “LMAO” means, but it doesn’t come naturally to that individual compared to the younger population.
