For my digital literacy narrative, I would like to focus on different streaming services (in particular, Netflix and Tencent Video). I have always been an avid TV watcher and I love watching different TV genres like dramas, reality shows, variety shows, and animations since I was in elementary school. Whenever I have free time, I’d say 80% of the time you’d catch me watching something. Especially so ever since COVID-19 and quarantine started in March 2020. I think potential topics I can discuss in regards to streaming services are the similarities and differences between a Western streaming service like Netflix and an Eastern streaming service like Tencent Video. For example, on Chinese streaming services, there’s a function called danmu, which is like a video commentary following the video in real-time and any registered user can post their own comments on the danmu. I’ve never seen any streaming services outside Chinese ones that have the same function, but I’d say you can compare it to live chats on live streaming platforms. I was not always so digitally literate with the functions of streaming services and I used to use them solely for the purpose of watching TV (and not even using functions like speed settings and caption settings, only the basic play/pause, the volume settings, and the video quality settings). I’ve come a long way since then, and I think I can definitely write about the skills and practices I’ve learned (such as using VPN to watch dramas that do not have broadcasting rights in the US–can’t believe I didn’t learn of this sooner because it’s actually so much more convenient than trying to find it on some illegal website that only streams in 480p).

I find your idea interesting, and this made me think of real-time comments from a different perspective. You mentioned how users could build and learn other trending words, which is great. I always thought real-time comments were annoying because sometimes the comments were disruptive. Some would even post spoilers, but I find it interesting how most video streaming platforms with real-time comment features are Asian websites.

Your ideas for the narrative caught my attention after you presented them in class. I am more intrigued to read your paper after reading your blog post. I believe that it will be very interesting to compare and contrast the functions of the two streaming services and also your own experiences with each. It’s not necessarily a suggestion since I’m not sure if you use other streaming services but it would be cool to incorporate and analyze other streaming services in your paper, if possible.

YAS SHARON YOU’RE A STAR
I didn’t know about the super cool danmu function on Eastern streaming services; thank you for informing me, Sensei Jiang ????????
At first I thought this outline looked kind of barren with the comparison and contrast of Tencent Video and Netflix, but talking about the Virtual Private Network will add more to the digital literacy conversation in your essay because I find it difficult to grapple it too. I hope you let me read your awesome digital literacy narrative!!!1!!!11!
