I will say, this whole project was something that I’ve never done before and is really pushing my limits. I don’t know why but I’ve always been afraid of editing on Wikipedia and just messing with the platform because of the damage I could cause. However, doing this as a group project is very helpful since it allows my group members and I to build up an underdeveloped topic but instead of one person doing it, having 5 different minds and collaborating is very helpful.
I feel like the group has a good understanding and a good start to tackle the project of building onto the Commercialization of the Internet Wikipedia page. Over the break we met over Discord to discuss the proposal, which developed an outline for what we want to do about this wikipedia page; what to add on, what to revise, the problems it has, and just to make the page overall better. The ideas are down, now we just have to start to research and add onto the wikipedia page. On Monday, during group work, we found good templates of articles that seem moderately developed. Seeing how other articles are formatted, it gave us a way that we would like to structure our Wikipedia page to make it more appealing to someone looking up “Commercialization of the Internet” while providing interesting and factual information.
I would look up articles that would help further develop the wikipedia page and give a better, simpler understanding of what commercialization of the internet is, finding an article with good develop to help inspire how we would want our article to look like, and start to look around what to add onto the article. In my opinion, the article is underdeveloped, bland, and doesn’t provide a good understanding of the commercialization of the internet so this will push the group to prove that we can make a bland wikipedia page into something great.

I have not worked on a project like this either! The commercialization of the Internet sounds like a totally awesome topic, and I’m confident that Group 1 will do a fantastic job improving its Wikipedia article. What are the strategies Group 1 will use to make the commercialization of the Internet’s Wikpedia article contain interesting information? In your blog post you mention that Group 1 will not only strive to provide factual information but make it interesting as well. What is the difference between interesting and factual information to Group 1?

I feel the same when it comes to even drafting my work for my Wikipedia post. Because there’s people who will eventually read my information and potentially take my information as 1000% ACCURATE information, so the fear of looking not so knowledgeable is in my head as I continue to draft my section.

Kacper,
I agree with your comment about feeling apprehensive to edit on Wikipedia because the stakes for this project are much higher as anyone has the ability to access and read our edits. But while this is rather daunting, this project also has a lot of value as each group will be helping to make an article more informative.

I get what you are saying. The idea of messing with a Wikipedia page and potentially providing lots of people with incorrect information get a little scary. But I agree, that working in a group with other people helps calm the nerves, as there are other people who can collaborate and fact check. I think your topic of Commercialization of the Internet is very interesting. I wish you look on helping to transform this page.

I have to agree with the fact of feeling like when you’re editing a Wikipedia page you’re going to “destroy” and cause “havoc” on the page you are working on. Definitely having groupmates counteracts that feeling because it allows us to refer to someone if we feel the action we are taking is incorrect.
