The video depicts a hilarious and illustrative summary of king Lear. This video illustrates downfall into madness of King Lear, after he disposes of his kingdom giving it to two of his three daughters Regan and Goneril based on their flattery of him. I chose this video because it’s funny and I still got an idea of the importance of sight versus blindness, words versus action, truth versus untruth, wealth versus poverty, good versus evil and kindness versus cruelty. The video highlights all the important scenes like Lear divides his kingdom, Edmund deceives Gloucester, Lear is cast out, Poor Tom, Gloucester is blinded, Cordelia searches for her father, Gloucester and Lear are rescued, Lear and Cordelia are reunited,Edmund plots, and the tragic ending. The video refers to the game of flattery as butt kissing in which you can see the difference between King Lear’s actions and words, he says to Cordelia he loves her the most yet when she doesn’t flatter him and says she loves him as a daughter should love her father he banishes her. Due to king Lear action of banishing Cordelia, Kent a nobleman of King Lear tells him that he is blinded by flattery and can’t see the truth and is making a mistake, for which Kent is also banished for. There’s another plot which indicates the conflict between truth and untruth and prospect of good and evil which is about Gloucester who’s another nobleman of King Lear who has a legitimate son Edgar and illegitimate son Edmund. For instance, Edmond lied to Gloucester that Edgar was plotting to kill him. However, Edgar clearly had no intention of doing so. However, the lie prevailed, and Edgar was reduced to be a fugitive. The concepts of kindness and cruelty were used to highlight the extent of King Lear’s metaphorical blindness. Cordelia presents kindness as she forgives King Lear while Goneril and Regan show cruelty by planning to kill their father and also discarded their father in to the storm. At the end King Lear dies out of grief of Cordelia passing away and then Edgar becomes king.
