Metamorphosis

The video I picked is a summary on metamorphosis and it also explains the significance of the story. This story is about a typical workaholic living with his parents, trying to work off the family debt. However, he wakes up one day to find out that his is a human sized beetle. At first, he struggles to get of bed and can hardly maneuver his body, as he’s not used to moving with so many legs. When he is seen by his parents as a beetle for the first time, they react pretty strongly, but his sister, Grete, is not so apprehensive. She is supportive to him and his changing in to a beetle doesn’t affect her love or relationship with him. In the following months, she cleans his room and feeds him. She moves the furniture out of Gregor’s room so that he can climb around the walls since he is a beetle now. When the mother catches another glimpse of Gregor and she faints. As time begins to pass by Gregor begins to realize that without him working, the family is in deep financial trouble. The family to overcome their financial troubles bring in three renters into the apartment to bring some extra money, but when Gregor is seen by the renters, they don’t pay rent and just leave. The family then decides that Gregor most leave. When Gregor hears about this he goes back to his room and dies. After Gregor death their lives turn around. They all get jobs and find a new place to live. The story is about the metamorphosis of Gregor a transformation from human to a beetle. The family unit could be seen as a metamorphosis. In the beginning we see a family that is burden with debt and immense problems and at the end each family member begins to take initiatives to work and to change after Gregor’s death they were dependent on him and relied on him before. The story is also about perspective as in Gregor’s mind even though he is a beetle, the part of him that is still human still characterizes and humanizes how we would react in such situations. Gregor also hovers between human and beetle we see moments when he covers himself from his sister with a bed sheet, so his appearance doesn’t frighten her. Although you might not wake up as an insect you might go through other things like depression or post traumatic disorder. The world will see you as you have changed not as a giant insect, but the world will respond to the metamorphosized you.
