Bridget Early- Intro

Hello everyone. My name is Bridget and this is my first semester here at Baruch. After graduating from Nassau Community College in the spring, I was thrilled when accepted into the Zicklin School of Business. I am majoring in accounting and hope to graduate in 2018. Aside from school, I work full-time for a private wedding company on the weekends. With a heavy work and school schedule these past few years, I’ve found that I have not made as much time as I would like to for reading. I am excited for the reading that we will do in class this semester, and hope to begin to read more on my own time as well.

As a teenager I loved to read Jodi Picoult. Her novels were so captivating, and usually only took me one or two days to read in entirety. My personal favorites by her are the Tenth Circle and Vanishing Acts. In addition to Great Works, I am also taking a Shakespeare class this semester. I read many of his classics in high school and will be reading many more in the coming months. I love picking apart his language, and I am excited to learn more about his writing styles.

My goal is to take away critical reading and writing skills from this class. I think it is so important to have an appreciation and understanding of English regardless of what field you are in. Although I want to be an accountant, I know that the abilities to read, write and communicate effectively will always be important. I hope to engage with other students this semester, both in the class and online, while learning from some of the most influential authors of all time.

Samuel Genack Introduction

Hello Everyone,

My name is Samuel Genack, but everybody just calls me Sam. I will be beginning my sophomore year at Baruch College this fall. I intend on majoring in Finance, and Minoring in Real Estate. In my free time I really enjoy playing sports. I enjoy playing golf more than any other sport. I find golf to be very challenging, but rewarding at the same time. Different golf courses, like books are all very unique, and have their own story, and every time I play golf I can never predict what my golf round will be like.

I do not read very much for leisure, but I do enjoy a good book every so often. My favorite genres are Sci-fi and Mysteries. My favorite book is “The Martian” by Andy Weir. “The Martian”, which also came out in theaters as a blockbuster movie this past year was incredible. I have always been interested in the concept of Space, and traveling to other planets, and “The Martian” made me feel like I was right there with the main character of the book on the planet of Mars.  I like to read sports news online on all different websites; My favorite sports news website is Bleacherreport.com. I am capable of reading in Hebrew, but I am not that great at it. My favorite book as a child was “And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie. I still remember reading “And Then There Were None”, and not being able to put the book down for a second. I hope to learn more about all of you this semester, and look forward to being classmates.

Assignment for Monday, September 5th

Introduce yourself to your classmates in a post on our class blog.  Include a photo of yourself, any biographical information you think would be helpful or interesting, and share with the class something about yourself as a reader.   (For example, what kinds of reading do you/don’t you enjoy? Any favorite books? What are your regular on-line reading destinations? Do you read in any languages other than English? Any memories of books you loved as a child?)  Your post should be 250-500 words.

To receive credit for this assignment, your introduction must be posted by 5 pm on Monday, Sept. 5th.

Hello!

Welcome to English 2850 HWA!  This is a hybrid class which means that half our time will be spent together in a classroom in a traditional “face to face” encounter, and the other half will happen outside the classroom, often in the cyber-space  of this class blog.  Plan on checking the blog regularly for updated assignments.    All electronic assignments (other than your two formal essays) will be submitted (usually here on the blog) by 5 pm on the day that they’re due.

Looking forward to our first session on Wednesday, August 31st and to the beginning of a wonderful semester!!

Warmly,

Professor Sylvor
