MoMa Visit

fullsizerender-2

“Tomorrow is Another Fine Day”, writes Argentinian artists Rikrit Tiravanija on a page newspaper shaped as a hat origami. This piece of art is so simple and basic but the writing on it catches your attention and manages to give you a warm feeling in your heart.  Walking around in the Moma you notice a lot of very unique and time consuming pieces of art, each with a deep story behind them and their artists. Then you have this piece. “Tomorrow is Another Fine Day” stands out to me. The quote reminds you that no matter what is going on in your life, things will be ok. It reminds you that tomorrow is a new day and you decide your happiness. All you have to do is build your own happiness and convince yourself that no matter what, you will be just fine. It doesn’t take different brushes and different colors and hours of work. Its the simplicity of the art and the words included that bring a smile to your face.

Daily commute

Its 5:45 am, Saddik wakes up to the song “Good Morning” by Kanye West as his alarm. After hitting the snooze button 3 times he finally gets up and sits on the edge of his bed. “I need to start waking up faster” he thinks to himself, as he stands up and start to get ready. After showering and getting dressed, still grumpy, he walks to the kitchen and makes his coffee. HE says hello to the super while she sits with her daughter waiting for the school bus that’s always late. He then walks across the street to his car. Normally New Yorkers don’t drive into the city but since Saddik works as a personal driver for a family that lives in the city he needs to always have his car with him (hence why he always leaves in the middle of class for 10 min to feed the meter for his parking). He drives to the city and normally parks in front of Starbucks on Lexington Avenue. It is now 8am and his fiancée, Fatima, is just getting off her bus and walking to Starbucks where the usually meet. In the meantime, Saddik orders Fatima her Caramel Machiato. “ He’s wearing the jacket I got for his Birthday” Fatima says as she approaches him with a smile. He kisses her and hands her the drink as they walk to their 9 am Management class in Baruch.

Tyger and Frankenstien

The creature created by Victor Frankenstein in Shelly’s “Frankenstein” is this hideous monster that was a result of madness. The creature held demonic and evil characteristics. In the novel a side of beauty and sensitivity shows up in his personality when wanted love and acceptance from a family, but that was just a cover hiding his true persona. After being rejected, his true emotions arise. He became violent and filled with hate and evil, with murder in his eyes he killed and burned the cottage of the family that didn’t accept him. The creature was truly a monster and like most monsters and killers he was hiding until that one moment that allowed him to be who he is. Just like the tiger from William Blake’s poem “The Tyger”. The tiger in this poem is a beautiful animal “Tyger Tyger, burning bright, In the forests of the night…. And what shoulder, and what art, could twist the sinews of thy heart?” says William Blake. At first glance this animal looks like beautiful creation, but one look into his eyes and a monsters appears. A monsters that craves nothing but the blood of its prey. This is why the creature from “Frankenstein” resembles the tiger and not the lamb from William Blake’s poems.

The Brith of The Creature

Movies and films are created for the entertainment of the viewer, and have almost always been an over dramatized, if not, a completely different adaptation the novels or literature that they portray. This fact is clearly proven when comparing the movie clips from “The Creature” to the Frankenstein novel by Shelly. In the movie clip when Victor Frankenstein brings the creature to life, he is overwhelmed with excitement, happiness, and a feeling of great success. Meanwhile, in the novel, Frankenstein gets hit with a sudden feeling of regret as he stares at what he created and sees nothing but a monster.  You notice in the novel the author doesn’t focus much on the creation of the “The creature”. Shelly however focuses on the attitude and mentality of Frankenstein and how he develops his feelings starting from coming up with the idea of bringing life to a human body, then building up to the creation itself and how he becomes possessed with the feeling of sadness and regret. The movie focuses on “The Creature” and builds you up to the moment of creation. As the viewer you become excited to see what the creation will look like and how it would react to coming back to life. The movie in this case turns a moment of sadness and disappointment into a moment of success and celebration.

The Abbey in the Oakwood

The trees have lost all their leaves. The structure which looks like leftovers from what once was a house, barely standing. the cemetery looks dark and abandoned. The second you lay your eyes on this picture you get a sense of darkness and depression. You can derive that when completing this work of art, the artist was not in the right state of mind. It looks like his mind was gloomy and possibly in a stage of his life where he was contemplating suicide. Everything in the painting is dead or withered. Cemeteries are often neat and have someone, a caretaker,  to keep the grass green and trimmed. however all there is here is abandonment.

Although we have all this negativity compressed into this one painting, you can still see that the painter projects hope and possibly a chance for a longer life. looking closely and analyzing the contents of this painting you’ll see large oak trees. Although they’re withered and leafless they are still oak trees. you might wonder what is so hopeful about having am oak tree in this painting. Oak trees are known for their long life span. some living for thousands of years. in my opinion this artist is going through a rough phase in his life and might be depressed but i also believe that he still has hope and still believes that his life will be better.

Fiction and Knowledge

The human brain is the most amazing form of collecting and creating data. It is an engine that’s always on the move. Always creating , analyzing, deciphering, and questioning. As humans we also use our brain to imagine and create fictional thoughts and ideas. We project these imaginations or fictions in many forms, such as: stories, movies, plays, music, and art. When these thoughts are exposed it allows other to think in terms of what they just heard, saw, and felt. This is when fiction can spark up knowledge and start creating, turing fiction into reality. Many of the things we use in our day to day lives started of as someones  imagination. Someone had imagined being able to fly like a bird and go from city to city and explore the world, and then someone else said  it could be done and they did it. The idea of flying seemed like a fictional thing to people at one point in history. The fictional thought sparked knowledge to certain people allowing them to use their brain to create. From there, the fictional idea of flying became a realty and over time developed into something that we use on a daily basis. I believe that fiction allows us to think outside the box. We imagine things because we simply want that imagination to be reality, the imagination is something you wish existed. By sharing what you imagine, you allow many others to think about that same thing and eventually build a knowledge that will then help you  transform that imagination into a reality .
