Walt Whitman gave a very fitting name to his poem ‘Song of Myself’. Throughout the poem, it is evidently clear that he is obsessed with himself and everything in the world seems to be revolving around him in his view. The personality he creates for himself is very egocentric and it actually disconnects the reader from the poem. I believe a good poem is something that can take the reader through a journey and involve him to some extent. But Walt Whitman’s poem seems to completely distance itself from the reader as he only concentrates on himself. The first line of the poem in Section 1 showcases this point. He starts off the poem with “I celebrate myself, and I sing myself”. In the next sections, Walt Whitman talks about other people and does a lot of comparisons but he quickly comes back to himself. It appears that the most important people in his life are ‘I, me and myself’. But Walt Whitman does seem to be a very vivid and insightful thinker. His poem clearly highlights the vast amount of creation he considered and looked at and compared and analyzed. This in itself is a great feat because to come up with so many considerations in such a holistic way takes a lot of effort and sincere observations. It surely looks like his thoughts were honest and carried deep personal meaning for him. His personality from the poem appears to be very individualistic, self-centered, dreamy, daring and insightful. Certainly he showed throughout the poems such character traits.
