It’s not a bag, it’s a Birkin.

Summary

Originally, my research paper answers the question if Birkins are worth the price and looks into the mindset behind consumers during the luxury purchasing process. This paper is written in a formal tone and filled with many sources to establish an analytical mindset with the readers. My paper aims for the reader to understand why people buy luxury products and why they should buy a Birkin as an investment. Luxurities products such as the Birkin (Pennington) and Cartier Love bracelets (Cartier.com) retail from $4450 to over $2 Million, exuding the highest form of money, power and exclusivity. The prestige of these items leads us to wonder if these products are actually worth the price as an investment or are the traditional investments of real estate and stocks. Furthermore, analyzing the history and marketing of these products and companies is essential to answering this question. Examining all the data, it is clear that only certain collectible luxuries are worth the price due to their image, worth and price. A part of this group is the Birkin from Hermes. The return rate, current luxury culture, and the suppky versus the demand, all contribute to why the Birkin is a great short term investment. Other collectible products such as the Cartier bracelets are not worth the investment, long or short term, for the same reasons why Birkins are a great investment. Nevertheless, people will still buy products from luxury brands that will degrade in money, value and looks only a few years later. This can be attributed to our immense consumption culture as people fall into a hole of just buying items for the sake of purchasing products because they are able to. The experience of being able to purchase these items makes them feel so special that they are able to justify the purchase. To dwindle this culture, people need to understand what they are purchasing and why they are purchasing it. It is understandable that if you truly like a luxury item to purchase it even if it costs $1000 or more, but purchasing a luxury product with no investment value just because it is luxury is not a smart investment and overall decision. In contrast, within this remix, I choose to use a video format of a mashup of different tik-tok videos as my goal for this remix is to communicate the exclusiveness and social presence of the Birkin. To achieve this goal, I have decided that my remix is going to be in an informal entertainment tone. As a result of this mode and medium, I hope to reach a different audience of younger students or individuals who would not read a 8 page research paper as well as further communicate my previously mentioned goal.

  1. I love the mesh of the different videos in regards to Birkin bag, it’s ironic how in one of the videos the guys says how its so hard to get a Birkin yet in the next clip the guy is seen with about 4 different Birkins and its crazy how small a Birkin bag can be and the demand is still at large.

  2. I just learned several new information about the value of the luxury brand and the most interesting is how much of an return investment you can get if you keep this luxury brands in that. This remix also impose the question of why are these bags so much money.

  3. Hi Ada! I thoroughly enjoyed your video because you included people on TikTok who come up on my For You Page like Audrey and Charles Gross. I think you did an amazing job on your Remix and it was very interesting.

  4. i loved how you incorporated rory and how people find birkin’s like not a big deal but then you look at the price and your jaw just drops

  5. Great Video. I really liked the last clip. It’s crazy that a small purse that maybe can only fit your phone can cost up to 40,000 dollars and will continue to rise in price.

  6. I love how the video answers questions that people are often curious about. It reveals the prestige and status that is associated with the bag and the various other reasons why it is in high demand.

  7. I love your topic especially because today society is very much involved in high end fashion and brands. The topic is a lot more complex and has value that we should know and recognize.

  8. I never knew how much value were placed on Birkin bags. If I saw one, I probably would have the same thought process as the girl in the first clip. But now that I know the backstory it seems like a bag only people of high status can get.

  9. Your video is interesting and informative. I didn’t know that birkins were that valuable; It’s crazy how much people would pay for an exclusive bag.

  10. I love your remix! The compilation of the videos were so carefully though out to be the most informative to someone like me who does not know much about Birkin Bags.

  11. The topic you choose was very interesting I always wondered what the hype was behind this specific bag and I think you did a good job going into detail on the origins of this bag and explaining why its considered such a luxury.

  12. As a female who knows about the stigma and hype about birkin’s I thought this video was great way to show someone who might not understand what a birkin is or the hype about it. Although some may still not agree that adoration for this bag and the price people are willing to pay is quite ridiculous (me included), they get broader perspective. Also the use of tik toks rather than text is more likely to grab an audiences attention, love the Gilmore Girls starts!
