Digital Literacy Narrative

When I first signed up for this class I didn’t know that it was a hybrid course. While looking up english classes I was happy to find one that only met once a week. I felt like I had lucked out because I would have more time to do all of my work and be able to study during the day. When I realized that the course was a hybrid I wasn’t sure about what to expect and I’m still not sure. From a hybrid course I expect to do a lot of writing and reading on my own and have more discussions in class since there is only a designated class meeting time once a week. I’m mostly worried about getting all of the work done on time and not getting overwhelmed with the work from this class and all the other classes that I’m taking this semester.  To me good participation in a hybrid class seems like it involves doing work on time and engaging with other students through the class blog as well as class participation.

Ever since I was little I have loved to read but I’m not the biggest fan of writing and that’s probably because I don’t feel like my writing is good enough. I read many different genres of and I also try to read the newspaper on a daily basis. I like to keep up with current events. When it comes to writing I am a fan of writing fiction and like to do it more than writing research papers. The forms of digital writing that I encounter on a daily basis are news articles and also other articles I see online that catch my attention. Some of the programs and technologies that allow me to read and write are email, text, and Google Docs among a few others. Prior experience from using multiple forms of media would have to be from a communications course I had taken where the professor was a  big fan of using technology to supplement class. In that class I had used both google docs and a class blog.

My method for reading analysis depends on the piece that I’m reading and the length of it, but most of the time I like to have a tangible copy so that I can underline and highlight what I find important and also write little notes for myself.

My earliest memory of writing is from kindergarten, I had written about what my summer had been like and what I liked to do for fun. Writing has changed for me since that memory by being less open ended and having many more restrictions than I’d like. In school all writing has to follow a certain format and stick to many of the same topics. I felt proud about writing a certain piece about two years ago when I started writing a story and posted in on an online writing community, where I received a few thousand reads from people in various countries around the world. My current views on writing are mixed, I like it in certain contexts when I can just write freely and dislike when there are too many constraints where I have to follow a certain style with no other options for change.
