Nicodemus Nicoludis’s poetry collection Multicene was published by Arteidolia Press.
Steven Swarbrick’s article, “Epicures in Kissing: Asexuality in Venus and Adonis,” appeared in Differences: A Journal of Feminist Cultural Studies. He published a short essay, “Destituent Ecology,” in Alienocene: Journal of the First Outernational.
Rafael Walker‘s review of recent volumes of Henry James’s and Nella Larsen’s letters appeared in the November issue of The Edith Wharton Review.
CONFERENCES, READINGS, WORKSHOPS & PRESENTATIONS
Christina Christoforatou delivered a presentation at Simon Fraser University’s Wosk Centre for Dialogue in Vancouver on the topic of consciousness in premodern poetics under the title, “Seeing in the Mind’s Eye: Theories of Consciousness from Aristotle to Bachelard by Way of Byzantium.” In addition, she organized two cross-disciplinary panels for the 49th Byzantine Studies Conference on behalf of BSANA and MJC, and moderated a third panel that addressed justice, legitimacy and morality in late medieval literary texts. The titles of the panels were “History, Memory, and Prophesy in the Twelfth Century,” “Byzantium Beyond the Academy: Research, Careers and Public Engagement,” and “Digital Byzantium: A Cross-Disciplinary Workshop on Digital Tools.”
Daniel Libertz chaired a panel on Kant’s concept of the mathematical sublime at the National Communication Association’s 109th Annual Convention in November. On this same panel, he presented his paper entitled “The Mathematical Sublime in Public Quantitative Writing: A Discourse-Based Interview Study of Public Writers.”
Steven Swarbrick gave an invited talk at Sarah Lawrence College on November 7th, 2023. The talk was part of a symposium on “Rethinking Nature.” Steven also presented at the World Picture Conference in Berlin on November 18th.
ACTIVITIES, ACCOLADES, GRANTS
Christina Christoforatou was reelected vice president of the Byzantine Studies Association of America at its annual convention in Vancouver. BSANA is the North American branch of the International Association of Byzantine Studies (Association Internationale des Études Byzantines) and is closely aligned with its international peers.
