Omer Fast

Before watching the video “5000 Feet is the Best” by Omar Fast, I was expecting to see a video related to an Omar Fast piece we saw in class where he showcased high quality sounds coming from regular things we see in our surroundings. Instead, the video is completely different. I was surprised to see acting, narrations, and movie-like cinematography involved.

I appreciate the use of sound in this video. The narration is effective without compromising the ambient sounds of all the scenes. I think that that’s the skill I need to develop more since I often struggle editing and making sounds seamless in my videos. This piece makes me definitely want to focus more on sounds in my final project.

The piece also inspired me to shoot in the dark. From 5:30 onwards, the scenes happen in the dark and even the city scenes take place at night. I realized that I have never taken the risk of shooting with darkness. I just see multiple issues that come with this I believe that it would be an interesting perspective that I can incorporate in my hipster project idea.

Another scene I noticed, although very short and is placed towards the end at 8:50, is when the camera points at Omar while being interviewed. It’s blurred! You see his mouth moving but the whole frame is blurred, which I believe is very unique and is only normally used when interviewing confidential people or witnesses of a crime. I am interviewing people for my final project and am thinking to put a spin to it just like how Omer blurs his.
