According to the three panelist, they all agree that politics has changed since the 2008 campaign. Ever since the launch of social media, elections has been more inclusive of old and new voters. Participations in the primaries has increased compared to the years before 2008. Especially, many Young voters are turning up in the polls and exercising their right to vote. The talk that most resonated with me was from Alan Rosenblatt.
Alan Rosenblatt is the Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy for turner4D and a communications and social media strategist. In this presidential campaign, social media has played a huge role in attracting new voters, especially the younger crowd. Especially now that almost everyone has their life in a mobile device and and perform daily task using the internet. Looking at an ad campaign is inevitable.
According to Alan, one of the reasons Donald Trump has been great at gaining supporters is because he is personable. He is directly replying to supporter’s tweets and retweeting supporter’s tweets. Because of these actions, people form a bond and trust with him. Therefore, Alan thinks it is vital for politicians to use this strategy. Even though this may have a negative consequence if certain beliefs are expressed and people disagree with the candidate. Even if you delete a comment or post, that can forever remain on the internet and may ruin the politician reputation.
He also suggests that politicians should use Hashtags on their post in order to capture a wider audience. He says that people should also pair a hashtag with other hashtags in order to reach other communities that might be interested in the same cause. He said that http://hashtagify.me/ is a great website that uses data from varies social media platforms to determine which hashtag is being pair with another hashtag.
