Estefany captures the theme of time very nicely in “Ocean Critters at Coney.” From the vantage point of the pier, Estefany turned her camera to the beach to allow the viewer to see the passing of people, seagulls, and the endless movement of the ocean juxtaposed with the closed Coney Island amusement park. This shows how an amusement park can appear frozen in time when it’s in off-season. From the churning of waves, to the swaying of fishing poles, to the slow writhing of the stingrays, there is a sense of calm throughout the video. This calm is perpetuated by the shots of swirling water at the base of a pier column. These shots are the best in the video in terms of encapsulating time and even go so far as to overshadow the titular “ocean critters.” The swirling created by the current creates an infinite loop and a mediation-like state within the viewer.
