The Spectacle of Life

Debord chisels away at mass media by essentially stating it ‘water downs’ life by stating the spectacle (recorded media like videos) “turns reality on its head” and makes “lived reality suffer,” which is all very true. The birth of social media platforms has led to an unprecedented increase in media from photos to video. All of these mediums of media have twisted reality from a state of living to a state of having (i.e. pictures of friends on international vacation, videos on Snapchat of friends having brunch every weekend).

From a mass media perspective, reproducing art, as Benjamin discusses, has become normal. It’s clearly seen via Instagram, one of the most popular sites for mass media with millions of media posted each day. While there are thousands and thousands of different artists on the site, it’s not hard to see that while these artists may have their own unique technique, some artists may get their inspiration from others, and their work may even look questionably similar to their inspiration’s work.
