Do Something That Scares You

I have a reminder set on my phone to do something that scares me every day. It started out as a way for me to get out of my comfort zone, to speak up for myself and others even when I felt uncomfortable doing so. As small as it seems, it’s changed my life.

For my final project, I’d like to create a video that encompasses human fear. I want it to show people talking about what scares them the most and why it scares them

Why fear?

We all have that scares us. When we face these fears we grow and learn. Maybe I can change a life too. This is a 3-way challenge.

  1. Can I get someone to air out what scares them?
  2. Can I get that same person to face their fears?
  3. Can I document the person’s growth? Did they feel better afterwards?

Fear is a great subject. Effective timing in your sequence will be effective. You haven’t mentioned what kinds of shots will be included. If you interview people for the video who will speak directly about their fears, it will be an interesting challenge to record footage that reflects that fear. I would avoid images that overtly speak about fears, and use ones more like the image of your cat circling (but maybe no more footage of your cat!): there was a powerful but oblique metaphor in that scene. Seek out similar powerful images. Possibly even the sense of fear will come from juxtaposition of two shots (either composited or in sequence).
