We are going to look (briefly) at the picaresque in America on Wednesday. There will be two short readings. You can find them below:

1. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
2. You Can’t Win

I believe that all the technical problems with the writing website have now been resolved. The comment function should be working on every essay now. Please make sure to use the time before Monday to read and respond to your classmate’s work, and to begin revising your own.

 

I am cancelling class today to give students a chance to read and respond to each others’ essays. I don’t see enough comments yet to hold an essay workshop. Please use this class time appropriately, and continue reading and commenting on fellow students’ essays over the weekend.

 

Readings on the syllabus scheduled for Monday will be pushed back.

Here is the example of an essay-outline that I discussed at the end of class. Please look it over as you think about how to organize your papers.

 

Please finish the Season of Migration to the North for our next class meeting.

Remember that your essay#2 proposal (and outline) is due. The essay proposal should be a complete idea written out in several sentences, something like a thesis paragraph. The outline may be very general – the point is to show that you have some idea where the essay is going.

F0r our class on Monday, please finish Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Please also read the chapter from Adam Hochschild’s book, King Leopold’s Ghost, called, “Meeting Mr. Kurtz.”
