Academic blog post#2

j.huang42 on Oct 11th 2017

On September 28, 2017, I went to a show that was assigned by my professor. The show was called “I will be there when you die”,  located in La Mama, Ellen Stewart Theatre. The performance was based on four actors that kept throwing and catching pins. During the play/performance went on, the actors switched positions and the way of throwing and catching pins. I think the actors did that because they actors wanted to use this performance to show the audiences to understand some themes. The themes were the friendship of life, the competition of people, and the changes of life. The actors worked together to throw the pins in each way and each of the actors were throwing the pins in different fancy ways, therefore that shows team work, and competition of life. As the show went on, the actors changed their ways of throwing and their positions on stage, which showed the changes of life of people. In conclusion, I found the show was very meaningful and it was a great show!

Joining E-Sport club

j.huang30 on Oct 11th 2017

Tuesday October 10, 2017, after taking class and having lunch, I had no where to go so I went to the E-sport club with my friends and classmates. There are people from different grade gathering together playing games. There are many games to play with such as League of legend, Overwatch, and etc. All these games are fun to play with friends and classmates because it require team work and could improve your relationship with your friends. However, it could also break your relationship apart because you or your friend will blame at each other if your lose a game. The atmosphere is great inside because it makes you feel comfortable, relax and you can enjoy playing any games. I hate the fact that I am unable to stay longer to play because I have class after this. Overall, it was a great experience joining the club and play game with friend.

Hacks for Baruch

Yimo Bai on Oct 11th 2017

When we hearing the word hacker, the first impression probably is a group professional people sit in a small chamber and manipulating the entire world’s Internet. But in the baruch college there actually is a club teaching you how to be a hacker. But of course this has nothing to do with the illegal internet access, in the contrast, it may even benefit the people. Because the thing they teach is more about how to design the website. Or be more specific they are teaching the basic usage of Java. Last week I just took the first class for this semester, rather to say it’s a class, it’s more like a tutorial of how to create a own website. The entire class was focus on the coding. When teacher teaching it, I can see the white letter just jumped into the black screen, when I first time glance at it, all of those words didn’t make any sense. But as long as I view it in a hacker’s way and trying to decipher those combination of letter and number. I was suddenly astonished by the shipshape order of those letter, everything is extremely organized and logical. I probably won’t even able to find one Bit of extra instruction from it. All this “nonsense” in that moment just like a masterpiece which crafted by the teacher. After all, since it is just the first class, Even I only learnt some basic coding on that class. But I thought it will be a very interesting class for the future.

UCLA Club

y.huang19 on Oct 11th 2017

I went to the UCLA club twice. I was impressed by how many people attended the first meeting. Before we went to the classroom, lots of students were already waiting in the hallway. As the meeting started, there were students sat on the ground because all seats were taken by others. Firstly, they had the presentation to introduce members and what’s the club about. The presentation showed us what activities they did and what they wanted to achieve as a club. After that, there were several games and they asked students to be involved in the game. Even most people didn’t know each other, it was not too awkward. At the end of the meeting, they prepared food for students and took a group picture.

I attended the second meeting a few days later. There were people standing at the back of the classroom even they changed to a larger classroom. The topic of the meeting was making mooncakes. Mid-Autumn Festival is a popular and important holiday in China. During this time, people would celebrate the holiday with families and enjoy mooncakes together. The club prepared presentation and materials for students to make mooncakes. Mooncake’s shape is related to the moon since it’s rounded, and it represents family is united together. There are many different types/ flavors of mooncakes, but I didn’t know the way it’s produced. It’s quite interesting to attend the meeting.

Career

q.rong on Oct 11th 2017

o you think the career is far away from us? Well, we are college students now, we are the boundary of our living experiment, we are already touching the place to begin out the career. However, the career area starts with a good and attractive resume. I am very glad that I have a chance to meet Ms to alternative my resume.

Do you think that it is easy to write a good resume? Well, could you see how many scripts have been added or alternative? Of course, the starting would be very difficult, because it is so easy to fall in the beginning. At the first time, when she told me that a lot of things is not good to show on the resume, and has to eliminate. Also, the format should be fixed as use salal; that very hurt me, because I been spending more than two hours to fix the error upon how they make the list clear organized.

Do you think is it the end of the story? Well, you have to prove that you would be a good employee; it is time to prove and walk into the office!

Join Clubs at Baruch College

i.shamsutdinova on Oct 11th 2017

Ilmira Shamsutdinova

Experience at my first club at Baruch Club.

On September 19th, I have decided to check out one of the clubs at Baruch College. MBA also known as Muslim Student Association. It my first time joying this type of club. I went with one of my friends Mir.  The members of the club asked us what we wanted from this club, even though this club has the word Business it was’t about Business. They promised us that there would be more things on interviews and internship as the club moves on. They asked some of the club members what we would like to see in this club and how the club can be helpful to us. It great way to connect to people and get knowledge. This club wasn’t about Business, it was what you like to know and how can they help you. Another great benefit of this club is that you get the opportunity to network. Meeting new students, making connections, and building relationships will all help down the line when you’re looking for a job. Because you’re all part of the same organization, you know the people you’re meeting have at least a few of the same interests as you, so their connections will be valuable. Another great opportunity is becoming a leader or an officer in an organization which will help you develop leadership skills that will be invaluable in all areas of life. You’ll be presented with opportunities to improve in public speaking, and gain confidence in yourself as an individual. It one of two greatest benefits Muslim Student Association offer.

Blog Post # 2 Visiting the MET

s.xiao on Oct 11th 2017

I went to the metropolitan museum of arts on September 25, because I have a Latin America paper that required me to visit the metropolitan museum and look at the artifact from the pre-colombian era. And on top of that I have to write a blog post for my freshmen seminar class.

You have to registered for a membership in order to get in for free. When I entered the museum, I saw a variety of acts from variety of culture across the world. I saw artifact from the Grace, South America, and Asia. I am super impressed by the sculpture from Grace, because the sculpture has every details just like the human. At the end, I had a lot of fun on this trip to the metropolitan museum of art.

Visiting Museum

r.wang7 on Oct 11th 2017

On Sep. 27, I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for my Latin America Paper. On my way to find the pre-Columbian artifact, I was amazed by the architecture and artwork that Met has, for instance, the European Sculpture and Decorative Arts and Greek and Roman Art…etc. In the Latin America artifacts section, I found out many attractive and observational artifacts such as the Crown of the Virgin, Funerary Mask, and Ceremonial Knife.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was qualified as a place of artistic style, which is also significant to look at the collection of the Met today. While the Met is reputed as one of the most influential museums in the world and worshiped for its extensive collections of artworks, it is undeniable that some of its collections were acquired over the period of colonialism. I am glad for being there.

Blog Post #2: Hacks for Baruch

David Zhang on Oct 11th 2017

On October 5th, 2017, I joined my first club at Baruch. The club that I joined in is “Hacks for Baruch.” October 5th is their first workshop when I first walk in, I saw lot of people sitting there. Later on, I found a seat and the president of the club told us that we need to write our name in the paper, and we can get pizzas. Afterward, I asked my friends “what are we doing in this club,” he told me that, “this club is going to be fun.” Well, as time goes on, the president said we need those apps to create a website, but I figure that I haven’t download anything that president list on the board. Then I started to download apps we need from the website. And unfortunately, my wifi just shut down, and I couldn’t do anything. In the meanwhile, I try to fix the wifi, and finally, I fixed it. When I fixed the wifi, I am lost. Therefore, I ask my friend if he can help me. Finally, I figure out what we need to do. Overall, I think this is a good club because I can learn new technical skills.

Club of UCLA

f.lai on Oct 11th 2017

The club of UCLA is United Chinese Language Association. I want to join this club since I’m a native Chinese speaker. I could tell people what is real Chinese culture. On August 31th, I went to the first meeting at UCLA. It’s a very popular club because there’re a lot of people waiting over there. When all of the students come into the room, the room is very crowed. After a while, the leader was present the PPT about what’s UCLA and what’s we going to do at this club. There’re interesting and attractive. Then, the leader leads us to play some games and eating some foods. Because of there’re a lot of people over there and the line was so long, so I didn’t want to get food. The first meeting was over by eaten the foods.

A few days later, UCLA have another meeting. It’s about making the moon cake. Even though I know the history and culture of the mooncake, but I didn’t know how to make it. So, I went to the meeting again with my friends. When we come there, the meeting was already started. Also, there’re still a lot of people over there, so we have to stand in the back because no more chairs over there. The leader also started the meeting by presented the PPT. But, this time the PPT is about the culture and history of mooncake. After the presentation, we started to make the mooncake! They prepared a lot of materials, and teach us how to make the mooncake step by step. I have to say it’s hard than what I think. It’s a very nice experience, and I may still come to join them if I have time.
