I went to get my resume checked for my third blog post assignment on Tuesday November 13, 2017, and another reason why I went to get my resume checked is that I want to learn how to make a good and attractive resume so I can be hire by the company in the future that I wanted to work in. I went there with a resume that I made last year in high school, initially I was thinking that my resume is perfect and no changes are needed. Then, the staff just slapped me in the face by showing me how many changes that I needed to make to the resume. This is a worthwhile experience for me and a step closer towards my future career. I strongly recommend you to go there and get your resume checked so there’s less thing to worry about in the future.

Today, November 14th, 2017, I went to the Starr Career Development Center for my resume. Before I came to Baruch
College, I knew that the school’s business school was very famous and good. If we can graduate with a good grade, we will find a good job in the future. Because there are a lot of companies that come to Baruch College to recruit employees. There are many excellent students in Baruch College and we will have many competitions. So, I went to the Starr Career Development Center that let some people help me to revise my resume. Because I want to find a good job.
When I went into the office, a teacher took me to a room and I gave her my high school’s resume. It is not good and unprofessional. When she finished revising my resume, she gave me some suggestions. First, before you write your resume, you have to decide your career, analyze your own strengths and weaknesses, and then select the target companies and positions. Second, you should emphasize “hard work” to make up for your lack of work experiences in the resume. Third, targeted content and professional formats are what your resume must do. If your resume are more targeted, it will more likely be accepted. Moreover, the teacher told me that silence is the biggest failure, you should be clear and confident to talk, to express yourself and to show, then you will be successful.

In the future, I would need to pick my major and minor in order graduate. However I would need to know more information on how to get my desired major. Furthermore I would need to know the specifics of the majors and minors. So I would need to go to a place where I would obtain the information. So last week on Thursday, I went to a Major and Minors fair with Mir, Grace and Ilmira. This fair was a time where all students could find the right major and minor they want. In addition the fair gives the students information about each major and minor. Each of these majors and minors has their own tables and a person who would give the information. It was a nice experience because I learned about the different majors and minors that Baruch offers and the major that I want to pursue. The major that I want to graduate with is Computer Information Systems so I went to that table. I learned that I have to take a some coding classes. In addition the major is similar to Computer Science but it focuses more on the business side of it. I also learned that the coding classes are similar to the courses that a regular Computer Science major student would take. After walking around the fair and talking with some people about the majors, I left the fair. Overall, the experience of the fair was amazing because now I am definite on what I want to do in the future.

Museum is a place that collect of artifacts, artistic, cultural, and historical. On October 26, 2017, I went to “Metropolitan Museum of Art” with my friend. It is my first time went to museum at United States. The weather is very is cold and chilling on October 26th, but I and my friend still need to go there for some purposes. All my purpose going there is to complete my 3rd blog post for freshman seminar class. My friend went there for her history class. When we got to the museum, there are lots of people walking in and out. There is also people sitting on the stairs to chill out. After looking around at outside of the museum, we decided to go inside and see what is inside the museum. When we step inside to the museum, my friend says she want to see virtual tour African art, so I followed her. When we saw the African art, it seems boring to me. But it seems interesting to her. Later on, we just walked around the museum. After around three hours, we got tired and want to go home because we have nothing to do, only walked around the museum and chill. As a result, it is a fun experience, but I just don’t have any interest to museum.

On November 9, 2017 I went to the Major and Minor fair with my friends Grace, Anita, and Ilmira. This was offered by the Starr Career Development Center as a way to get students interested in their future. I still haven’t decided my major so I went there to seek information with each department. I thought maybe if I do that maybe I can start making my decision as to what I want my Major and Minor to be. The multipurpose room where the fair was taking place soon became very crowded. I made my way around a few of the tables just listening to other people talk with the teachers about the majors they were interested in. I wasn’t feeling to well that day so I just followed my friend Anita around as she looked at some of the majors she was interested in. Later on I took a quick picture outside and left. I also forgot to submit the survey that I was given. Of all the majors the English minors interested me a bit, but I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to that. Anita and I later caught up with Grace and Ilmira who were by the art minor table. I kind of listened to them talking to the lady but then headed out from the fair. It was an interesting experience and I hope I could do this again in the future.

On October 26, 2017, I attended a workshop for teaching how to make a good resume. At the beginning of the workshop, the instructor told us usually it should be one page of your personal resume. You should declare your education and volunteer experience on your resume. And then, it’s better for us to write down which position you are interested in. By the way, you can also mention your unique skill, for example, what language you can write and read. After you finish your draft, you could develop it by going to the writing center. Finally, he recommended we can type it in both Word and PDF form, which can make sure the printer will not cut off your resume.
After send out your resume, luckily, you may get the chance for an interview. When you are waiting for the company’s response, you need have to do something preparing for your interview. For example, you can research the company by visiting the company website or reading newspaper – WSJ, The Actuary, etc. And then, you need to learn about the industry by researching or reading BASS Articles. And the most important thing is you should learn some technical skills, like Excel, VBA, Python, etc. Also, we can keep attend some workshop.
Overall, we need to practice, practice and practice. A good resume is the first step to find a nice job.

On November 9, 2017 I went to the Major and Minor Fair with my friends Ilmira, Anita, and Mir. The Major and Minor Fair was located at the Multi-purpose room. Before we entered the room we were given a survey that we had to fill out and return at the end when we leave. Walking in to the room you were able to see many tables that had different Majors and Minors on them. The place was really crowded so it was really hard to walk through all the people and it was really hard to see what was on the tables. Ilmira and I went to a table that was for Art Minor. The lady at the table was explaining to us and showing to us what classes we can take if we want to take art as a minor. Sadly none of the classes that were offered interested me because it wasn’t the specific art that I was interested in. After she finished talking we went to explore some more Majors and Minors that interested me. It started to get really crowded so we decided to leave the fair. On our way out we saw out academic adviser Peter. We stopped to talk to him and also asked him some questions that we had. He reminded us to send in our three semester plan. After talking for a while we left after filling out our surveys that we almost forgot about. Overall the Major and Minor Fair was a great way to learn about each Major and Minor. I was able to explore and now I have some sort of idea of what I want to do now.

The main reason I go to Baruch college is to find a better job in the future. As everyone knows, Baruch college has a lot of resources about career, and I would likes to learn more about it. A few days ago, I went to the Starr Career Development Center for my resume. I know it’s a very good chance to help me to be more professional when I needs to find a job. When I steps into the office, a teacher leads me to a room. We’re stand down, and he starts to look over my resume. It was the resume that I used in my high school, so it’s looks very casual and unprofessional. The teacher marks some problems that I have and tells me how should I upgrades it. For this little meeting, I only have about 10 minutes to do it, but it was really effective for me. I think it’s a good opportunity to help yourself. After that, There’re also some other workshops in the Starr Career Development Center, and everyone can go there as many times as they want. For me, a new freshman, those workshops will help me learn more about career and let me knows more information, so it’s one of amazing place to go.

Today, November 9th , 2017, I went to the Major and Minor Works offered by the Starr Career Development Center. Here I was able to seek information with each department start making my decision as to what I want my Major and Minor to be. Before this event I was kind of lost and confused as to what I really want to study, well I still have some doubts and questions, but now I really have a good idea as to what really interests me. I’ve decided that my mayor will be Entrepreneurship and my minor will be Communications Studies. You might be asking why these two? Well, from the start of my semester my intention and idea of my dream career is one in which I can be my own boss and one in which I create and develop ideas, and Entrepreneurship could be the right path for me. My minor at first was going to be Spanish, since I thought well probably its going to be easier for me to get this because I was born speaking Spanish and I am very fluent in it and also I have took and passed the AP Spanish and AP Spanish Literature exams in High School. But I have decided thanks to the advise of my counselor, Peter Dachille, and my own decision to aim for a minor in Communications Studies. The reason for this is that I am very talkative, but I am very shy in public, and I think that this minor will help me to get over the embarrassment and fear of talking in public. I am not good at public speaking but one goes to college to learn not to do things that are with in your comfort zone. And who kn
ows may be I’ll turn out to be very good at communicating and everything that involves this minor.
