Family Business Management/Values

I think of the most important core values Baruch students have is education. Baruch is one of the top CUNY schools in the city and we are all here to learn and gain knowledge needed to move forward in our careers. If education was not of importance and on the to do list for a Baruch student then that student would not be here. Before Baruch we all envisioned a better future with a great career and financial wealth. As in the article Building Your Company’s Vision, it was stated that the envisioned future is what we aspire to become, to achieve, to create. (pg 66) We all have a vision but we know in order to achieve our vision in the future we must use the education given at Baruch in the present to do just that.

I think commitment and success are two more core values Baruch students have to achieve their goals. Baruch students are competitive and that’s because we all strive for success. Many of us want to become somebodies whether it be a CEO, engineer, doctor, lawyer etc. We all want to succeed and in order to achieve that success we have must have commitment. Baruch students are very commitmented and determined, staying up all night writing research papers or making the library our second home as we study for finals. Baruch students are very much focused on achieving our envisioned future.  The article mentioned that to create an effective envisioned future it requires a certain level of unreasonable confidence and commitment (pg75) and I believe Baruch students display both and are well on their way.

I also believe dedication and teamwork are also important to a Baruch student. Team work comes into play when professors give us group project after group project after group project  Working in groups are not the easiest thing to do but here at Baruch we know that these team projects are created to help us gain experience when dealing with a team which is something we will probably be doing in the future.

Going to Baruch and graduating is a BHAG for us, we have a goal and we are trying extremely hard to make it to that finish line and proudly say we have completed this goal.

From my personal experience at Baruch I have met many students who are the first generation in their family that will be graduating with their Bachelors.  For them the core value is getting an education from one of the most prestigious college in the United States. The passion they had to study hard, spend tireless hours preparing papers, doing research, preparing for exams and finally getting that piece of paper that will afford them the opportunity of get a job in the field of study. For most, it will be a way for them to help their families meet financial obligations. It also affords them a chance to work and succeed doing what they are talented in and one where their core values and a core purpose will be used. Their business strategies and practices will have to be altered when they get out in the changing world but school would have help prepare them for this as they continue with their passion.

Synergy has been seen during team projects and presentations where the group is able to achieve more than they could if they had worked individually. Each member is interested in getting a good grade and although sometimes there maybe one group member who may be a part of social loafing the other team members unite and make sure the work gets done. They all want to be winners and score the highest point in the class and team members generally strive for that. Because many tasks are beyond the capability of individual alone in the work place students know and value the fact that they are being prepared for teamwork in the work place. They know that this will help them later when they can contribute and be a part of shared goals that will be important in work performance.

There is also a sense of community,unity and value among Baruch students. Most join clubs where you can see a respect being shown for cultures and people from diverse background. It is like a melting pot of cultures and helps with societal bonding. One can feel at home in these group and many stay friends for years even after graduating. This is consistent with the envisioned future since networking can help one find a job in the future.

Students are very competitive and strive to get the highest grades since they know that the recruiters that come on campus look for those students that excel in their classes. Everyone wants that opportunity to intern at some of the top firms that recruit at Baruch so that they can later be offered a permanent position. This would help them achieve their envisioned future of making as much money as they can while working doing what  they are passionate about.

 Baruch carries a strong educational sense. Everyday we are surround by so many intelligent colleagues.  The faculty is always an important resource that we could utilize. there are so many talent professors and staffs. The educational atmosphere urges us to learn more. People study hard for their envisioned future. They all intangibly push us to improve, bring us to reach our excellence.

One major core value I figure out is cooperation. Our students have to do group project at so many classes. We learn how to work together. We show a great team dynamic. There is a Quote from Helen Keller, “alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” We know we can’t do everything all alone, we need help from others. We learn more when we cooperate.

 Networking is always important. It is easy to find friend in campus. It weaves a big net for us to connect many diverse cultural friends.  Baruch provides us a chance to connect others. We build our relationship. We start to network. This connectivity gives us a resource for our future growth.

Recognition as a Baruch student is also a value to us. It is a branding we have been labeled. When we go to the society, people recognize us.

What we have achieved is valuable. Baruch leads us to such achievement. We will not stop at where we have accomplished. According to  the article “Building Your Company Vision,” we have to turn the words into vivid picture of envisioned future. We all envision a beautiful future. Our achievement at Baruch is one step for us to get to the goal of our vision. We create our vision, we will work hard to reach our goal.

The students at Baruch College value a great education are goal-oriented and want to get a head start in life. Being a student at Baruch for the last 4 years, I’ve surrounded myself with a lot of successful students who have always dreamed big and are ambitious since their Freshmen year. Being around so many independent, quick-thinkers allows me push myself harder and not only excel academically, but aspire to achieve many personal goals as well. We as students at Baruch understand opportunity cost and know that time cannot be wasted and “free days” and gaps should not be taken lightly. The library is always crowded for instance, and that shows something. Even when I stop by school on a Sunday, I still see the library full of students. We believe in working hard in order to play harder later on in the future.

We all envision a better life for ourselves in the future. Whether we are being mentored to work hard to build our resumes and coach ourselves to speak better, we all want to achieve that 6-figure or million dollar mark. Students involved on campus learn to work in teams and run organizations as if it were an actual business. I’ve seen many student leaders on campus come and go, but their mark on Baruch forever stays. In Collins and Porras “Building Your Company’s Vision”, what stood out to me was “You must be able to translate the vision from words to pictures with a vivid description of what it will be like to achieve your goal. I think Baruch students have a pretty good idea collectively of what they want to achieve. In terms of values, integrity and  honesty definitely plays an integral part in their success.

Baruch being the most diverse school in the most diverse city in the world really bring a lot of different views and perspectives on issues and problem solving. Students are brought together by one common goal and that is their desire to succeed financially which starts for many at not owing debt. I remember  freshmen and sophomore year my BHAG was to graduate and have a six figure corporate job. Now so close to graduation I begin to think about core ideologies and purpose. I believe that anyone can make a 6 figure salary however sacrifices will have to be made. An individual  observing one’s core values reveal who they are and guides in the direction of where they want to go. After all sacrifices are suppose to be made when it is worth the trade-off. It is much healthier working for a purpose and taking the steps toward an envisioned future.

The students here at Baruch are thirsty and strive for a success. Everybody wants to graduate and group projects have been great in preparing us for the next step in our career. Group projects are about learning to work as a team and the diversity at Baruch make it so that students gain much more experience and become open to newer and innovative ideas and problem solving. It can be fun and other times there are many obstacles to overcome but it is all useful experience. You never know what kind of managers and coworkers you may be stuck with. Envisioned future for students after graduation is as diverse as the student body. Everyone has a different plan but our path will be guided by our value of value itself. Never giving up too much for what we want.

Amazingly, schools being so diverse coming from different backgrounds attending Baruch College, students here, share the same value.  I believe that the overall core values for students I notice throughout my years at Baruch consistently were independency, professional growth, and commitment. Many of us have some pursuit in becoming working business people after graduation some time in life.  As I said earlier Baruch is a very diverse school and some students travel here from across the country even the world to come to this school for a good education. Some may be here alone in the city and with no family members around to help guide you it can be very challenging to find your way around. Students are responsible for completely tasks Yes, Baruch academics alone is very challenging but students here know of the benefits they will gain once they graduate and so commitment is the key to one’s success. Core values are important to stay true to. It is a guide to defining who you are and when you are going in life as mentioned in by Collins “Building Your Company’s Vision”.  Most Students here at Baruch, will agree that it is important to live up to these core values and it will aid in their future.

Values are the beliefs by which people live.  On Building your company’s vision, Collins and Porras identify how a company can build their vision through their core ideology and by envisioning the future. Building a vision is not enough if it is not supported by core values.

The students at Baruch have a core ideology that is present and as visible as something you could really touch. It surrounds our campus and has a certain feel to it. It is amazing how such a large group can be so diverse, yet lively, independent and functioning at full speed. As many posted, we come from different backgrounds, different countries, and different cultures: we are the most diverse business school. However or maybe just because of that, we are still ONE since we share so many VALUES: a passion for life, commitment to excellence in our education, respect for one another, pride in ourselves and what we represent, achievement of our goals even in challenging times.

Porras & Collins say that cores define a company and Dennis Jaffe on Campden FB stated that “values are not created by a values statement … Values are created by people’s behaviour, though they aren’t always clear or explicit. They are hard to find because they aren’t objects, but rather principles and goals that underlie the way people treat each other and make important decisions”. These intrinsic values are the beliefs by which people or company live and pass the test of time.

At Baruch, we define ourselves to what we really are and we are not afraid to BE ourselves because we know that acceptance is part of our DNA. The diversity of the many clubs existing or a look at the people in the group assignments is proof in itself. Take an elevator trip during rush hour, from the ground to any other floor or stroll by the library and you will have the spiciest taste of this most amazing vibrant and cultural sample which makes out our school. From the student body, to our esteemed educators, to the working personnel, we are different and proud of it. Our students are all very ambitious and believe in greatness in the future through the vehicle of education. That’s why, tired or not, working or not, living with our parents or having heavy responsibilities, we still strive for excellence, and do the best we can.  We know that education is the surest path to mold our future to our BHAGS and we dream big!

Not living up to the potential we know we were created for would bring shame to ourselves and what our school represents and lives by and that’s not something to be added to Baruch’s culture!

The topic of values is one that brings to mind ethics and beliefs, as values are core to who a person is. At Baruch diversity is the norm, both ethnically and culturally. Though the overarching commonality in near all baruch students is a drive to succeed professionally, I have yet to meet a Baruch student either male or female who doesnt consider themselves a future breadwiner for their family and it is that hardworking passion that can be found at Baruch. I also find that Baruch students are a lot more pragmatic then Columbia or NYU students, we tend to know that we want to get into business and aren’t willing even when accpeted to NYU or Columbia to bog ourselves in over a hundredthousand dollars in debt to achive professional success, which is why by and large their is disdain for the Occupy Wall St. movement at Baruch, for at its core are college students who went to pretestigous universities, boged themselves down in debt and now want the goverment to bail them out of their obligations, to have their cake and eat it too.

So if I would have to sum up Baruch students I would call us pragmatic, a value quite frankly lacking in a large number of the student body of other colleges.

Building Your Company’s Vision by, Collins and Porras, expressed that it is important to know who you are than where you are going, for where you are going will change as the world around your changes.  The journey of life has its curves and bumps, ups and downs but if you identify and clearly define your inner core values you can not only survive life but adapt and change to make the most of your life.  Core ideology, “defines the enduring character” of each and every individual.  At Baruch we are fortunate to have a very diverse background of many different individuals from different places all around the world.  I find it fascinating that even with all of these differences in not only culture but beliefs and attitudes we have very similar core values, values which we hold close to us, values that withhold the change of time and life.  The students at Baruch seem to have a very deep respect for culture and diversity.  An appreciation for secondary education and within this a drive for personal growth and development.  Next, Baruch students show value for independence, getting tasks done by themselves in a city where it is easy to get lost.  Baruch students have a sense of community, which is shown in the dedication to school clubs and events.  Lastly, Baruch students have a sense of unity.  Despite being in the busiest cities and known for the typical NY “unfriendliness,” Baruch students have each others back.  This is witnessed even if you are in the library, students who I have never spoke to before will watch my belongings as I take a break.  Students in class are willing to do group studies to help each other prepare for an exam.  We may always be in a hurry and running off to work or an internship but when it really comes down to it all we remember we are all the same, humans, driving towards the same goal of success, happiness and self-fulfilment.

Looking in a student perspective, I think that the overall core values of the students in Baruch includes Education, challenge, quality recognition, and professional growth. Core values is defined by Collins and Porras in their article “Building Your Company’s Vision” as the essential and enduring tenets of an organization that have intrinsic value and importance to those inside the organization. Baruch College operates to become an institution that provides their students a challenging and quality education that is very useful in their student’s professional growth. Baruch students in turn live by Baruch’s core values and apply it in their individual selves. This set of values makes the school unique than any other college.

A student’s envisioned future will include professionalism, personal growth, and integrity among others. Whatever the student learned while in Baruch will have an impact in their future. As a business school, most students will envision the values I’ve listed because it is very important to assure ourselves that we can grow and live up a strong set of values in their professional lives.
