Student Values

From my experience most students’ core values are they value freedom, freedom of religion, and freedom of the press. The article states core values are a set of tenets that require no external justification. Core values are intrinsic to each student, which means they are also personable to each of them. Almost all students that I have talked with value freedom of religion and freedom of the press. All other values seem to be a subset of these two core values. These directly correlate to the Walt Disney Company in which their core value is evoking people’s imagination. The founder thinks this should come from an inner belief system. Most students envision themselves graduating from college and obtaining their dream job in the workforce. Most also would like to have a family that they can support with their education. The consensus regarding a college education and raising a family is unanimous when it comes to most students I have encountered. I definitely see parallels with student values and what they envisioned for themselves in the future. For instance; freedom of religion, most student would like to find a place of worship with the families they will create after graduation. For freedom of the press most student want to preserve free speech so they can have the right to be vocal when it comes to elected officials. So yes, there is definitely consistency between what students’ value and what they envision for themselves.

  1. I agree that as part of the Baruch community we all share similar values and some of our personal values might have shifted in order to fit in the community. I also agree that most of us are looking towards having a family in the future but all of us secretely or not dream of being the Big Fish in the sea on day. Being human beings we all want to serveour human purpose and create a family but we also want to fulfill a social cause and be part of something big. I think Baruch College’s students’ BHAGs are very competitive because of the lask of too many resources we are forced to strive for success and achive audiacious goals.

  2. I also think that as Baruch students we have a lot in common and most students have similar values and their vision for future. I guess when we think about our career we are thinking about our future including to have a strong family that we can development and support. For example I have in plans to have a family like most of us but all my life I am trying to set goals for myself and achieve them. I want to be a part of society more for now than I want a family. As we are all very ambitious young future professionals, studying in Baruch College, we want to have a successful career and this is a vision for most of the Baruch students. From the article we know that: “A true BHAG is clear and compelling, serves as unifying focal point of effort, and acts as a clear catalyst for team spirit”-Collins and Porras, 1996.
As world is very competitive now, students should keep up with the latest knowledge and technologies. Hence, Big Hairy Audacious Goals are very competitive. Baruch students should know and understand their visionary goals that are more strategic and emotionally compelling. Many students set their goals that describe what they hope to accomplish over the coming days, months or years. Some goals are very hard to achieve but possible. As we can see from article, core value is very important, it helps to define what values are truly central for us.
