Questions for Hilton Als

By Jamilya

1. The original article in The New Yorker is more than 10 pages with very detailed and in-depth facts of Pryor’s biography, my question is what amount of  time was needed to compile the story?

2. Did Hilton Als watch all the mentioned movies in his article such as “Lady Sings the Blues” or “Uptown Saturday Night?”

News Stories

1. Russia ordered an American Diplomat to be deported  due to accusations of recruiting a member of Russian security  services. “Nikolai Zakharov, a spokesman for the FSB, said the Russian approached by Fogle was free and that there were no charges or accusations against him.”

Is this fair? If a Russian/Iranian/Syrian spy would have been detected on US soil, would his/her expulsion or deportation be a fair response?

2. 19 wounded during Mother’s day parade in New Orleans. Brings up two issues: 1. The gun law debate once again and the media coverage (i.e. terrorism attack vs. gun violence, the difference in the spectrum of the media coverage)

Questions

I would like to ask Hilton Als:

1. How do you come up with the ideas or the themes for your writing. Since there are so many topics that were mentioned and written about in one way or another in various publications, how do you work on your writing to make it stand out? To make it necessary to be heard and read?

2. How did the new digital era change your skills and approach to writing. Do you think it made it easier to search for information through multiple search engines and academic archives, or back in the days when writers had to physically search for their information, the work was done more efficiently?

3. Which advice from your own experience would you give to the beginners?

Conflict Story Proposal. Jamilya

Conflict Story Proposal

With the beginning of the midterm week, Baruch students as well as other college students at The City University of New York will benefit from the open 24-hour libraries on their campuses. As a public college, Baruch’s William and Anita Newman Library gets most of its funding from the city. Compared to private schools and its libraries in New York City, the Newman library is open daily from 7 a.m. to midnight. Many students at Baruch feel that this needs to be changed. College students have different schedules, some take classes in the evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., some from 7 p.m to 10 p.m, which at the end of a school day leaves them with a few hours to study in the library. Also, as a commuter school, many Baruch students work during the day, which leads them to study at night. I think this issue is important because as students, we have the right to have a place to study that is open to us at any time. There are so many factors to consider: some students have abusive homes, where they can’t physically study; some of the households are loud and noisy, etc. While the college officials claim that a 24-hour library is not cost effective. By having less people, they can turn off heat, dim lights and save energy. It doesn’t make sense to have it open 24/7, when there are only 10-15 people in the whole building. Yashvir Soborough, senior at Baruch College says: “We go to an University. We need a place to study, to study efficiently.  Regardless of the time of the day.” Another student at Baruch, writes on the forum: “I’ve always argued that CUNY’s are as good as any private school, but this is one of their shortcomings. CUNY libraries either close at 10 or 11pm.”

For this story, I would like to conduct a survey in our class, to see how many students would vote for a 24/7 library. Also, I am trying to contact the Student Government to know their thoughts on this issue and whether students have previously brought up this topic in order to fix it. And I am looking to find an official contact, who would be able to give me official and financial data, and reasons for library’s current working hours.

Place Story Proposal

Few people know about the International Youth Fellowship center, which is primarily a small church located one block away from Baruch College. Recently, this Christian-based non-profit organization decided to expand its volunteering work among CUNY campuses. After submitting all the paperwork to create the IYF club at Baruch, they still need the Bearcat students to join the club and participate in changing the global community by teaching English in Mexico and Haiti. IYF strives to advance Christian mission work in developed and developing countries, administer alternative methods of post-secondary education and to facilitate short-term and long-term volunteerism domestically and overseas. And all of this is happening in a small two-room apartment, on third floor on Lexington avenue. The tiny church consists of a small number of pastors and about 40 volunteers from Korea who worship every Sunday in a small room filled with guests. The volunteers live there from Monday to Saturday, eat there and educate themselves in this place. This story is important because the IYF organization is willing to promote goodwill and send college students abroad to volunteer and provide them with many workshops that teach how to become a leader. But since no one is aware of this organization, its work and its kind-hearted people, it seems like the IYF club at Baruch college is going to remain half empty without students getting all of the possible opportunities that IYF wants to provide. I also think that it’s going to be an interesting place story, because this small place is unique in its atmosphere and people. This place is a home for many young people who dedicated themselves to spread the goodwill. It’s a place where people of all ages come to become better.

All my research is based on interviews with the volunteers and workers at IYF. I haven’t found anything on Factiva, but for the article I will ask IYF if they have any press clips about their organization.

Vignette:

As I have mentioned before, the IYF and its church are located a block away from Baruch, it’s on the third floor, it has two rooms, one big one – with the cross in the middle for the worships on Sundays, and the smaller room is for the workers and the volunteers who live there. It’s packed with office necessities, as projectors, books, notebooks, chairs and tables. On the photos the room has been already cleaned for the next day and all the furniture was gone. When I came for the interviews, there were a few people, mostly young volunteers, who were waiting for their supervisors to come from a new location that is supposed to open soon, because of the excessive amount of volunteers who from South Korea. The room appears to be empty because the interview was conducted in the evening.
